STEM Funding for MSIs

  • 85 million to Historically Black Colleges and
    Universities,
  • 15 million to Predominantly Black Institutions,
  • 30 million to Tribal Colleges and Universities,
  • 15 million to Alaska, Hawaiian Native
    Institutions, 5 million to Asian American and
    Pacific Islander Institutions, and
  • 5 million to Native American nontribal serving
    institutions.

Hawkins Centers of Excellence (New Request)
  • FY 2013- 30 million for the new Hawkins Centers
    of Excellence program to increase the pool of
    minority educators by expanding and reforming
    teacher education programs at Minority-Serving
    Institutions (MSIs).

  • The Presidents budget requests 55 million for a
    program (First in the World), under the Fund for
    the Improvement of Postsecondary Education
    (FIPSE), to support reform and improvement in

    professions.

    Hispanic and low-income youth and adults in
    green jobs and technology.
  • HACU requests a 20M competitive grant program
    for migrant and seasonal farm worker programs to
    develop skills and training to move into
    year-round employment.

Foreign Assistance Act(HSIs Study Abroad Program)
  • Establishes a 40 million competitive grants
    program for an HSIs Study Abroad Program under
    the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (P.L 87-195)
    Section 105 and (PL 107-206) under the U.S.
    Department of State, Bureau of Educational and
    Cultural Affairs.
  • Hispanic students from HSIs to study in
    countries of the Western Hemisphere for a period
    of no more than (2) years.
  • Western Hemisphere college and university
    students for study at an HSIs for a period of no
    more than (2) years.

    provisions in the authorization of the 2012 Farm
    Bill under Sec. 14204 of the 2008 Farm Bill
    reauthorization to be added as Sec. 14204.2
  • A 40M competitive grants program authorized for
    HSACUs to train Hispanic farm workers and other
    Hispanic youth working in agriculture-related
    fields for jobs requiring skills in new
    technologies in agriculture, food science and
    safety, bio-energy and environmental sciences,
    and other related skills as the Secretary may
    determine to be appropriate.

  • A 5M special scholarship program for Hispanic
    youth from families employed in agriculture and
    food processing who demonstrate an interest in
    pursuing a career in the agriculture and food
    science industry or related areas.
