  • If you were a farmer would you grow enough food
    to just get by, or would you grow extra?
  • Explain your answer

Jobs
  • People grew more food then they needed, leading
    to a surplus (extra).
  • It was not efficient for everyone to farm and
    produce all the goods they needed to live and
    work.
  • Surplus food allowed some people the opportunity
    to specialize in various types of work.
  • i.e.) blacksmiths, weavers, bakers, potters

Definitions - Not everyone can be a farmer!
  • Division of Labor - Characteristic of
    civilization in which different people perform
    different jobs.
  • Artisan - Skilled worker in one field
  • i.e.) blacksmith, weaver, baker, potter

The Barter System
  • Barter System - The trade or exchange of goods or
    services without using money.
  • This is how we buy things today, money!

Barter System Two Problems
  • 1. Finding someone who wants what you have, and
    someone who has what you want.
  • 2. Both parties must be happy with the trade.

Currency
  • Each of the early civilizations realized the
    problems with the barter system and standardized
    currency for their people to use in exchange for
    goods and services.
  • The Lydians of Mesopotamia were the first to use
    coins.

StonehengeWe think it was built between 3000
1500 B.C.
  • Great example of what Neolithic man could do.
  • (without the wheel)
  • Started in the Neolithic era, but was finished in
    the Bronze Age.
  • Located in England
  • Not 100 for sure what it was built/used for ,
    but we have some ideas and evidence.
  • Calendar, Worship Sun God?
