  • All of the organisms you just saw are either
extinct or critically endangered all due to
    humans
  • In fact, 99 of all the species that have ever
lived on Earth are now extinct
  • 5000 years ago 1 species would go extinct about
    every 1000 years
  • Between 1600 and 1900 a species would go extinct
    every 4 years
  • Today a species goes extinct every 30 minutes

17
  • As of 1999, 27 animal and plant species had
    disappeared in Canada.
  • Numerous populations were overexploited and
decimated before hunting laws were adopted.
  • Other more recent extirpations resulted from
farming, logging, industrial pollution and other
human activities that have destroyed essential
    habitats.

18
  • The disappearance (extinction) of a species is a
biological phenomenon that has existed since the
    beginning of life on earth.
  • It results from the elimination of species that
can no longer adapt to a constantly evolving
    environment.
  • However, while extinction of species in the past
was of natural origin (for example, as a result
of volcanic activity or falling meteorites), the
disappearance of modern species is increasingly
    the result of human activities.

19
  • Most extinctions are taking place in tropical
    rainforests
  • WHY?
  • But Canada has this problem too

20
  • Since 1978, the Committee on the Status of
Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) has
studied more than 490 species, 487 of which are
presently on the list of species at risk
  • COSEWIC classifies species at risk according to
    five categories

21
How Species at Risk are Classified
Classification Description Example
Extinct A species that is no longer found anywhere Blue walleye
Endangered A species that is close to extinction Eastern cougar
Extirpated Any species that no longer exists in one part of Canada, but can be found in others Paddle Fish
Threatened Any species that is likely to become endangered if it is not helped Wood Bison
Vulnerable Any species that is at risk because of low populations Grey fox
22
Eastern Cougar (end)
Whooping Crane (end)
Eastern Mountain avens (end)

Pitchers Thistle (end)
Fowlers Toad (thr)
Wolverine (vul)
23
Even the Sarnia area has a great deal of Species
at Risk
  • Lambton county is home to some very unique
habitat that is found nowhere else in Canada
  • There are also species that are found only here,
    and nowhere else in Canada
  • Pinery Provincial Park has an Oak Savannah
ecosystem and the Sydenham River is in the
    Carolinian Life Zone

24
Species at risk in Lambton county include
  • The American Badger

25
  • Barn Owl

26
  • The Blue Racer

27
  • Peregrine Falcon

28
Eastern spiny soft-shell turtle
29
These species are now extirpated from Lambton
county
30
What factors cause species to go extinct or
become endangered?
