  • Imperialism- Latin word from Roman Empire.
    Countrys domination of political, economic
    social life of another country. (2,000 years ago
    Roman Empire dominated Mediterranean area.)
  • 1800s- Some European countries with the United
    States controlled most of the world.
  • 1800-1914 known as Age of Imperialism.

  • Political Rivalries CAUSE 1
  • Several countries start colonies Great Britain,
    France, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Holland, Spain,
    Portugal and Russia in Africa, Asia and India.
  • Difficult communications between colonies and
    European countries allowed colonial governors
    generals to run affairs. Armies used to expand
    colonies borders.
  • Conflicts arose when colonial governments claimed
    same territories.

  • Desire for New Markets CAUSE 2
  • Owners/operators of factories sought new sources
    of raw materials and new markets for products.
  • Raw materials such as rubber, copper and gold
    came from Africa cotton and jute from India and
    tin from Southeast Asia.
  • Colonies provided new markets for Industrial
    Revolution products such as tools, weapons and
    clothing.

  • Colonies needed people who were loyal to
    imperialist country. European leaders urged their
    people to live in the colonies.
  • 1840s, French citizens settle in Algeria, started
    farms on land seized from Algerian farmers.
  • British emigrate to Australia and New Zealand in
    1850s in search of gold.

  • Great Britain gets land in Africa, Asia and the
    Pacific. The phrase the sun never sets on the
    British Empire described Great Britains vast
    holdings.
  • People saw emigration as a way to become wealthy
    or famous. Cecil Rhodes one of these people, an
    adventurer made wealthy by gold/diamond mining.
    He founded the colony of Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe).

  • Religion and humanitarian reasons cause people to
    emigrate to colonies.
  • Catholic and Protestant missionaries went to
    Africa and Asia. Believed Christianity and
    Western civilization could transform the world.
    Missionaries built churches and set up schools
    and hospitals.
  • Some colonial officials tried to impose Western
    customs and traditions. Discouraged colonial
    peoples from practicing traditional customs and
    rituals.

  • Some Europeans believed in the theory of Social
    Darwinism to prove cultural superiority. Believed
    white Europeans the fittest people in the world
    and spread Western ideas to backward peoples.
  • Rudyard Kipling, British writer expresses
    imperialist attitude in his poem The White Mans
    Burden.

  • Forms of Imperialism
  • Imperial nations gained land through Treaties,
    purchases and military conquests.
  • Colonies- territories that an imperial power took
    over and ruled directly through colonial
    officials.
  • Protectorate- Natives of a territory own
    government but policies guided by foreign powers.
  • Sphere of Influence- region of a country in which
    the imperial power had exclusive investment or
    trading rights.

    spread French culture and make territories
    overseas extensions of France.
  • British focused on administration, less inclined
    to convert colonial peoples in British customs
    and allowed local rulers to govern territories as
