Title: Acids%20and%20Bases

1
Acids and Bases
  • SWBAT Analyze strong/weak acids and bases.
  • SWBAT Analyze conjugate acids and bases in a
    reaction.

2
Acid/Base definitions
  • Definition 1 Arrhenius (traditional)
  • Acids produce H ions (or hydronium ions H3O)
  • Bases produce OH- ions
  • (problem some bases dont have hydroxide ions!)

3
Arrhenius acid is a substance that produces H
(H3O) in water
Arrhenius base is a substance that produces OH-
in water
4
Acid/Base Definitions
  • Definition 2 Brønsted Lowry
  • Acids proton donor
  • Bases proton acceptor
  • A proton is really just a hydrogen atom that
    has lost its electron!

5
A Brønsted-Lowry acid is a proton donor A
Brønsted-Lowry base is a proton acceptor
conjugate base
conjugate acid
acid
base
Conjugate base of an acid is formed when the acid
donates a proton. Conjugate acid of a base if
formed when the base accepts a proton
6
Conjugate Pairs
7
Example
  • Label the acid, base, conjugate acid, and
    conjugate base in each reaction

HCl OH- ?   Cl- H2O
H2O H2SO4 ?   HSO4- H3O
HClO NH3 ?   NH4 ClO-

Strong and Weak Acids/Bases
The strength of an acid (or base) is determined
by the amount of IONIZATION.
HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, HClO4, HBr, HI, and HIO4 are
strong acids.
9
Strong and Weak Acids/Bases
  • Acids and bases are divided into STRONG or WEAK
    ones.
  • STRONG ACID HNO3 (aq) H2O (l)
    ---gt H3O (aq) NO3- (aq)
  • Strong acids are 100 dissociated in water.
  • HNO3, HCl, H2SO4, HClO4, HBr, HI, and HIO4 are
    strong acids.

10
Strong and Weak Acids/Bases
  • Weak acids are much less than 100 ionized in
    water.

11
Strong and Weak Acids/Bases
  • Strong Base 100 dissociated in water.
  • NaOH (aq) ---gt Na (aq) OH- (aq)

Other common strong bases include KOH and
Ca(OH)2. CaO (lime) H2O --gt Ca(OH)2
(slaked lime)
12
Strong and Weak Acids/Bases
  • Weak base less than 100 ionized in water
  • One of the best known weak bases is ammonia
  • NH3 (aq) H2O (l) ? NH4 (aq) OH- (aq)
