Title: Simulating the MJO in the NCAR-CAM

1
  • Simulating the MJO in the NCAR-CAM
  • Using a Relaxed Arakawa-Schubert
  • Parameterization
  • Walter Hannah
  • Colorado State University

2
The MJO
  • A tropical disturbance that propagates eastward
in the tropics with a period on the order of
    30-60 days.
  • Affects tropical and extratropical patterns of
    precipitation, circulation and temperature.
  • Varies year to year depnding on ENSO activity
    among other things.

3
The Relaxed Arakawa-Schubert Parameterization
  • Modifies the original Arakawa-Schubert cumulus
    parameterization to relax toward equilibrium.
  • A minimum value of cumulus entrainment of dry
air, µ, is used to limit activity of deep
    convection. µ a/Dwhere D is the depth
    of the Boundry Layer.

Future Work
  • Look at more model runs with different µ
  • Start looking at composites
  • Cloud height distributions
  • Humidity profiles
  • Compare with SP-CAM
