  • RefWorks is web-based bibliographic software
    package that enables you to
  • Organize your research
  • Include citations while you write your paper
  • Build a bibliography in a variety of formats
    (e.g. Harvard, APA etc. RefWorks has an extensive
    format collection from different journals)
  • Import references from many data sources
    (online databases, web pages, text files, other
    bibliographical managers, manually, RSS feeds)
  • Create bibliographies in different document
    formats (Word, RTF, HTML, etc.)

Logging in/Creating an Account
  • RefWorks is an internet based s this means you
    do not only have to access it through the Library
    webpage www.uj.ac.za/library but can go
  • directly to the url www.refworks.com.
  • This makes RefWorks is accessible anywhere any
    time, regardless of your location.
  • To log in, you will need the Group Code please
    email me for the code
  • Click on RefWorks

  • You must then type in your group code before you
    can register as an individual .
  • If you click on RefWorks straight from
    www.uj.ac.za/ library, this will be your first
    screen.

Use the Login using your Group Code

You can now sign up for an individual account, or
log in if youve already registered.

  • Now you are ready to start building your own
    database of references.
  • For TUTORIALS for RefWorks, click on the
    different steps as outlined in Steps 1-3.
  • If you are ready to LOAD REFERENCES into RefWorks
    keep this page open as is.

  • Add a new Reference by hand
  • Import references from a text file (e.g. Emerald)
    or from EndNote
  • Export references in a text file
  • Organize folder (rename, clear, delete)

Navigating RefWorks
The Bibliography is used to create a list of all
your RefWorks references, or just a specific
folder or a predefined list. This is not your
references list / list of sources

  • Some features are duplicated on the Tools option
  • The most important options are
  • Write-N-Cite we use this to automate the
    citation process in Word
  • RefGrab-It we use this to grab website
    references
  • Share References we use this to share RefWorks
    folder with other users.

and RefWorks itself.

Getting References into RefWorks
  • If you are ready to use RefWorks, you start by
    doing a normal search in any of the databases UJ
    subscribes to.
  • Go to www.uj.ac.za/library and click on
    Databases.
  • You will then need to enter your surname,
    student/staff number and PIN to gain access to
    the databases.

Choose any database from the list provided . An
example would be Academic Search Premier
available via EbscoHost.

  • Click on EbscoHost Web
  • Then choose your databases, I will only choose
    Academic Search Premier

  • As you go through the articles and print/email
    them, mark/add the ones you would like to export
    to RefWorks.
  • Then click on folder view (or marked folder) to
    export them

?REMEMBER you can only export references not the
full text/abstracts! RefWorks works with
references only.

Click on Export to export the references youve
marked
In the next window, tick Direct Export to
RefWorks and then on Save.

RefWorks will open up automatically and you will
see the importing screen. As soon as importing is
complete, you will be able see how many
references were imported.
Click on View Last Imported Folder to view the
references

Organising References
  • Your list of references will be saved into the
    Last Imported Folder from here you can
  • move it to another folder
  • change the reference style
  • sort it by title etc,
  • print or
  • delete it.

To create a New Folder, click on Folders and then
on Create New folder
Type in the name of your new folder and click on
ok.

You can now select your references from the Last
Imported Folder and Put them in your new folder
(marked in red) Once youve done that they will
be copied to the new folder, and you can delete
them from the Last Imported Folder

Do a normal search and save it to the marked
list Then download it and save it as a text file

filter/data source and Attach your text file
Once the import is complete your references will

Adding a reference by using RefGrab-It
RefGrab-It works with your browser to capture
bibliographic information from web pages giving
you the option to import that data into your
RefWorks account.If an ISBN number, PubMed ID
or DOI exist on the web page, RefGrab-It will
automatically search various web resources to get
supplemental information that may be of interest
to you.  RefWorks may also locate RSS feeds
related to that web page.When you use
RefGrab-It on a web page, it automatically opens
a "temporary results page" in a new window.  You
can view the information and additional resources
first, then decide if you want to import the
data.

To use RefWorks in writing your research, click
on tools and then on Write-N-Cite.

Once complete W-n-C will be a toolbar attached to
Word. It will also be a shortcut on your desktop.

When you are ready to type your research, you
will be using the Write-N-Cite icon installed in
Word.

Type your research as you would normally and when
you are ready to add a citation, click on the
Write-N-Cite icon the RefWorks log-in page will
be displayed, so please log in using the Group
Code and your username and password

Cite at the reference I want to add.

Once youve clicked on cite, RefWorks will place
the citation into your Word document

We now need to add the page numbers. To do this
click on the Edit Citation link to add the page
numbers

Type in the page number, choose your citation
style and click on Save to Word

The citation has been added, do NOT worry about
the number and the or the /s, that is just
how RefWorks adds it, when you are ready to print
out the final version (once youve added the
bibliography) the citation formatting will change.

Once you have added all the citations, and you
want to include the bibliography, click on
Write-N-Cite again and then click on Bibliography

Then click on Create bibliography

You will be asked to choose an Output Style i.e.
in what reference format should your bibliography
be. Choose one from the list and click on Create

All the citations have been changed and your
bibliography created.

Remember that you are still responsible for the
final editing and cleanup of your references.
RefWorks saves you time, but does not do
spell-checking or editing of any of the
references imported from the databases, manually
or from feeds.
