Postmodernism
2
Definition
  • Postmodernism is an umbrella term describing an
artistic movement that developed all over the
world after WWII in particular, it took start in
the 1950s and 1960s and developed in 1980s and
    1990s
  • Its name means that it comes after and goes
beyond Modernism. It picks up some of its
features but it turns them upside down

3
Cultural Background
  • Postmodernism rises up in a decentered world, in
which the centre of the universe is no longer
    Europe
  • It is an artistic movemente, since it embraces
    music, literature,art, drama, architecture

4
Objective
  • The main objective of Postodernism was to express
the changing of the world after WWII every field
of life (economy, technologies, art, literature,
    semiology)
  • To achieve this goal it rejects elitarism and
calls for also low culture and new forms of
expression like advertisement, collage and others

5
Main Features
  • The main features of Postmodernism are related to
relativity and create a pattern in which there is
    no centre
  • In this way a subjective point of view is
suggested, against the objective and absolute
    point of view of Modernism
  • As a matter of fact there is a mix of high
culture and low culture, not disdaining
advertisement and new forms of expression
  • A lot of social, religious and political matters
interview in artistic works making art nearer to
common people and to global world

6
Literal Devices
  • Postmodernism doesnt use lots of literal devices
because of its own nature of relativity and
decentered vision. Although the most common ones
    are
  • Economic images and logos
  • Alternative languages
  • Exotic words
  • Rewriting

7
Conceptual Devices
  • Anthropology
  • Populations and cultures
  • Globalization and economy
