• From the surface down to around 200 meters
• Sunlight will penetrate the surface zone
• well-mixed with currents, waves, and tides

Transition Zone

• Extends from between surface zone and deep zone
• Usually between 200 800 meters deep
• water temperature drops rapidly

• below the transition zone
• completely dark conditions
• only bottom dwelling animals can live in the deep
  zone
• temperature near freezing with extreme pressure

Estuaries

• an inlet or bay formed at the mouth of a river
  where fresh water mixes with salt water
• are very susceptible to pollution from factories
  or plants upstream
• can support a diverse environment
