Beginnings
  • Abraham- founder of Judaism
  • Different from others in Mesopotamia-He believed
    that there was only one god--Jehovah
  • Told by God to go to Canaan

  • A famine caused the Hebrews to go to Egypt in
    search of food.
  • After living in Egypt many years the Egyptian
    enslaved the Hebrews because they were afraid the
    Jews would become too powerful

Leaving Egypt
  • Moses was selected by God to lead the Hebrews out
    of Egypt to go back to Canaan the Exodus (the
    leaving)
  • American slaves sang about Moses to keep their
    hopes of freedom alive
  • Mt. Sinai God gave Moses the Ten Commandments-
    a set of rules regarding responsible behavior
    value human life, self-control, and justice

    Romans
  • Were not respected by the Romans BUT were allowed
    to keep their own religion as long as they
    respected and followed Roman law
  • Jesus was born during the time the Romans ruled
    Israel.
