Benefits Of Job Safety Skills

Safety Training
  • To work at the Bonnyville Swimming Pool there are
many certifications each staff member must have.
    Mine include National Lifeguard-Pool, Water
Safety Instructor, Standard First Aid with CPR
Level C, Lifesaving, and CPR Instructor.
  • The three safety modules that I completed in
school were 1210, 2210, and 3210 that helped me
at work in many instances. This knowledge with my
training ensured the highest quality of safety
for all patrons at the swimming pool.
  • These safety concepts with common sense and
precise actions reduce the risk of injury not
only for the employees but all visitors on the
    workplace.

Module 1210 Personal Safety
  • Module 1210 taught me to use extreme personal
safety precautions. This must be used when adding
chemicals to the water in the pool.
  • The use of caustic soda helps reduce the pH level
in the pool when it is too high. Since this
chemical is very dangerous a full face shield and
    rubber gloves must be worn.
  • There is absolutely no reason for any worker not
to take the time to prepare and be outfitted
properly for contact with this chemical.

Module 2210 Workplace Safety
  • The Module 2210 focuses on workplace safety. Our
bulletin board shows how to stay safe on the job
site. Each person on shift passes by this
    reminder at least twenty times.
  • As well we have cards to fill out when anyone
sees an unsafe situation and then it is given to
the supervisor as soon as possible.
  • We receive Health and Safety magazines that help
review various safety procedures. This is
reinforced in our monthly in-services with CPR
skills review and address any safety concerns.

5
Module 3210 Safety Management
  • In the Module of 3210 I gained knowledge in the
area of safety management. My PPE includes the
mandatory use of sandals because of the water
tests, backwashes, and pump checks I perform in
    the basement of the pool.
  • All pertinent information must be documented so
that the chlorine in the pool stays at the pH
    7.0.
  • In the area of engineered control there are
guards on rotating shafts of the pumps, chlorine
detectors, and pressure relief valves on the
    boilers.
  • Since there are many staff members administrative
controls are used such as the listing of all
procedures in the batching of chemicals.

6
Career Outlook
  • Since I have accomplished the basic safety
training with these three modules and expanded my
training at the pool I have found my area of
    interest.
  • Working with boilers such as this one that heats
the pool is a fascinating piece of equipment that
I wish to pursue in post-secondary education. The
area of power engineering is my choice for a
    career.
  • As well as furthering my education I know I must
extend my knowledge of safety. I look forward to
H2S Alive, TDG, WHIMIS, and Confined Space Entry.

7
Finale
  • Besides achieving safety training and work
experience on the job I have learned that safety
becomes as natural as eating and sleeping. A
person must be on the look out for potentially
    dangerous situations.
  • I believe the most single important rule that
every person should follow is stated by the
Occupational Health and Safety Board, Safety is
    an Attitude.
