Decline of the Puritans

Based on your own opinions towards the Puritan
lifestyle and the Salem Witch Trials, how do you
think attitudes towards the Puritans are going to
change?
An increasing number of people will be
disillusioned with the teachings of the Puritan
clergy.

    Puritan dominated Massachusetts

Anne Hutchinson
  • How does Anne Hutchinson differ from the other
dissidents who disagreed with the practices of
    the Puritans?
  • She is a woman!

7
Anne Hutchinson
  • Puritan Views on Women
  • God created women as inferior creatures
  • Morally weak (Eve tempting Adam)
  • God did not give intelligence and understanding
    to women
  • A womens chief duty was to her husband and
    children
  • A woman understood God by studying the goodness
    of her husband
  • A woman must not speak openly in church

8
Anne Hutchinson
  • Anne Hutchinson
  • Believed it was a blessing to be a woman, not a
    curse
  • Started a bible study in her home
  • Advocated for equality for women
  • Interpreted the bible, as opposed to the literal
translation purposed by the Puritan leadership

9
Anne Hutchinson
  • Tried for traducing the ministers
  • Embarrassing the pastors by spreading lies
  • Remained unrepentant for her actions
  • Found guilty- as being a woman not fit for our
    society
  • Banished from the colony (helped found Rhode
    Island)

10
  • Collectively what do the cases of the dissidents
    provide evidence of?
  • People were getting tired of Puritan control!

11
Decline of Puritans
  • Large numbers of the population will leave
    Puritan controlled areas
  • This decline coincided with the Great Awakening,
    a religious movement that emphasized
individuality rather than orders from a formal
    church
  • Also provided opportunities for people to gather
    and discuss politics.
