The aim of this assignment is to analyse and
develop a specific aspect of your performance.
To do this you will follow the stages of the
CYCLE OF ANALYSIS as illustrated below.
CYCLE OF ANALYSIS
STAGE 1 INVESTIGATE Where you explain how a
specific aspect of performance was investigated
through gathering and analysing information. You
will do this by observing your performance and
then gathering data and collating the results of
these observations.
STAGE 2 ANALYSE Where you explain how
knowledge acquired from the study of relevant
concepts has helped you to analyse your
performance and plan a development programme. You
will do this by comparing your performance with a
model performance using agreed criteria and then
identifying your strengths and weaknesses.
STAGE 4 EVALUATE Where you reflect on your
planning, effectiveness and benefits of your
programme of work completed and discuss your
future development needs. You will do this by
re-observing and then evaluating your performance.
STAGE 3 DEVELOP Where you explain how both the
content and suitability of your programme of work
were monitored over the period of your training.
You will do this by preparing your plan of action
and then completing your training programme.

Validity is probably the most important factor in
data evaluation. Validity is the degree to which
an Observation Schedule or Test actually measures
what it has been designed to measure.
RELIABILITY of data.
Reliability is the consistency with which an
Observation Schedule or Test measures what it has
been designed to measure. A reliable Observation
Schedule or Test should yield similar results
every time it is given Measurement techniques,
testing conditions, test administration,
participant preparation, and environmental
conditions are among variables that should be
STANDARDISED as much as possible.
VALIDITY, RELIABILITY and RELEVANCE of

TASK EXEMPLAR
What conclusions can you draw from the results of
the basic observation schedule?
My O.S. results more or less confirmed what I had thought
earlier when I used personal reflection to consider what my
strengths and weaknesses were in Volleyball. The skill I had
felt most comfortable performing during games was the
serve. This is a relatively simple, closed skill and my results
show I had little difficulty performing it with a age success
rate of 90. At the other end of the scale my blocks and my
spikes did not show up well at all with a 0 success rate for
both of them. However, the problem didnt just lie with me
not performing them well, but more with the fact that I only
attempted a block once and a spike twice. These are both
important net skills and are clearly a deficiency in my play.
My volleys and digs yielded better results, but a 60 and
50 success rate respectively still leaves a lot of room for
improvement in what are essentially the basic shots in all
Volleyball rallies. If I am failing in 8 out of every 20 tries at
playing a volley in order to set up an attack at the net, my
team is not going to get many chances to kill a rally using
a spike. Similarly, if I am only managing to dig successfully
50 of the time, it is going to be very difficult for my team to
set up a controlled attack. I need to improve the success
rate of both these shots, but to begin with I am going to
concentrate on the dig which is the poorest of the two.

VOLLEYBALL - DIG
The DIG is used to receive serves, receive
spikes, play any ball at waist height or lower,
and play any ball that has gone into the net.
Due to the fact that this skill is used almost
exclusively for receiving, it is often referred
to as just a pass.
The Dig (forearm pass) is most often used to
direct the ball to a teammate. It is important to
absorb the force of a hard-hit ball and direct
the ball in such a way that your teammate can
execute a volley (overhead pass / set) on the
next play. The dig must be executed efficiently
if your team is to be successful it is the
starting point of a successful attack. If the
ball is passed poorly, the setter will have
difficulty placing the ball in the best position
for the spiker.

VOLLEYBALL - VOLLEY
The VOLLEY (set) is an overhead pass that you
execute to place the ball in a position for the
spiker. This pass is normally played by the
setter, but it may be used by any player. The
volley can be either a forward pass or a back
pass. The height of the volley depends upon the
type of spike desired. The volley (overhead
pass) can be used to receive any ball higher than
shoulder level and coming to the player with
little force. The volley is the most efficient
way to handle the ball. The ultimate goal of a
volleyball team on attack is to complete the
3-hit sequence of dig, volley, and spike. Your
team must convert a hard-driven serve into a ball
that is easily manageable. This requires
cushioning the ball as you receive it and
directing it high and easy to the setter in the
front court. The volley (set) is usually your
teams 2nd contact of the ball in the 3-step
attacking move. The setter must place the ball
in a position where the spiker can hit it
aggressively back to your opponents. The volley
determines where and how well the attack
develops. A well-placed set enhances the
attacking teams ability to gain an advantage
over their opponents.

VOLLEYBALL - SPIKE
The hard-driven SPIKE is the most important
attacking weapon in volleyball. Most teams gain
the majority of their points from successful
spikes. The spike takes very little time to
travel from the spikers hand to the floor
therefore, there is little time for opponents to
move to the ball. When spiking it should be
easier to perform the skill from your ON-HAND
side as opposed to your OFF-HAND side. After
learning how to spike your team will have the
skills necessary to complete the 3-part sequence
of dig, volley, and spike. The purpose of this
sequence is to convert your opponents attack or
serve into your own attack. This conversion is
referred to as a TRANSITION. Your team must be
able to receive your opponents serve and quickly
and efficiently change from defence to attack.
If your team is unable to make this transition,
you will be forced to return a free ball to your
opponents. A free ball is any ball that is
returned over the net in a manner other than a
spike. A free ball is easily received by your
opponents. Teams that continually return free
balls to their opponents will find themselves
constantly defending.
