  • To learn about and demonstrate understanding of
    the concepts of the Reformation of Christianity
    including the good bad of the Catholic Church
    and new religions that sprouted during this time.

What is the CATHOLIC REFORMATION?
  • The effort to reform (change) the Catholic Church
    from within.
  • Basically the Catholic Church was putting itself
    through rehab in order to save what power they
    still had.

  • Catholic supporters were working to save the
    Catholic Church stop the spread of
    Protestantism.
  • Why would this idea be popular in Spain?
  • It is in Southern Europe (near Rome)
  • Had been working to become Catholic ONLY for 100s
    of years

  • Was at one time home to 3 main religions
  • Christianity (Catholic)
  • Jewish
  • Islam

  • Cooperation between religions led to peace
    prosperity for all
  • People shared ideas culture
  • New art, literature, philosophy, mathematics
    science

Why did things change?
  • Catholic rulers began to fear the other religions
  • Worked to get rid of them RELIGIOUS WARS
  • 1492 the Monarchy defeated last of Spanish
    Muslims
  • Ordered to convert to Catholicism or leave kingdom

The SPANISH INQUISITION
  • Members of the Catholic Church who were sent to
    find punish any Jewish or Muslim people still
    in Spain
  • Even converts were punished for holding on to
    their past beliefs

Christians were NOT safe
  • Protestants were punished because they were not
    Catholic
  • Also attacked Catholics who helped those being
    punished

    soldier
  • Created to serve the pope the Church
  • Were basically warriors for God the Church

  • Teach about Catholic ideas
  • Hoped Catholic education would turn people
    against Protestantism

  • Founded by Angela Merici
  • For girls ONLYWHY?

Changing Church Policies
  • Council of Trent
  • Catholic leaders brought together to discuss,
    debate (hopefully) reform or change the
    Catholic Church
  • Met 3 times between 1545 1563
  • Still thought it was important for the clergy to
    help Christians interpret the Bible
  • Bishops had to live where they ruledhad to live
    by their own policies

Fighting against the spread of Protestantism
  • Some didnt think these reforms were enough to
    conquer Protestantism
  • Thought Protestants were HERETICS who should be
    punished

  • Religious courts in Italy to punish
  • Declared some books TOO DANGEROUS and had them
    banned
  • Reading banned books excommunication

  • Missionaries dedicate lives to the spread of
    religious ideas
  • Catholic missionaries sent to areas which are
    non-Catholic they had to convert people there
