  • A hyphen is used to
  • Join words that together form a compound
    adjective placed before a noun.
  • I have one sixteen-year-old student.
  • Michael Jackson had a very high-profile court
    case.
  • Write out numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine.

  • Show a word break at the end of a line.

  • Show ownership

  • The dogs bone
  • Indicate that something has been intentionally
    left out.
  • Dont (contraction of do not)
  • Class of 05 (20 in 2005 is left out)

  • When using an apostrophe to show ownership
  • Add s to a singular noun to show ownership even
    if the noun already ends in s.

  • If a noun is plural and ends in s, just add an
    apostrophe.
