  • When Written90-100 AD
  • Style Symbolism, NOT STORY FORMAT!
  • For whom? More Mature Christians (written much
    later than the other 3)
  • Portrayal of Jesus? LIFE-GIVING Messiah

    first versus,
  • The only Evangelist to do that

5
Sample Passage of the Gospel of John
  • When He had left, Jesus said, Now is the Son of
Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. If
God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify
him in himself, and he will glorify him at once.
    (John 13, 31-33)

6
Johns Gospel Symbol
  • Johns Gospel symbol is an Eagle
  • Why?
  • His is the Eagle because his Gospel is so
different than the other 3 Synoptic Gospels.
  • Also because his Gospel is more of a Reflection
of Faith since a generation of Christians already
    occurred at the time.

Review Questions
  • 1. How does John begin his gospel, and what does
it tip off to about his approach to Jesus?

9
Answer 1
  • John begins his gospel somewhat as a musical
composer begins his symphony with a beautiful
overture that previews and sets the tone for what
is to follow. It tips us off that his approach to
Jesus will differ dramatically from the other
    three evangelists.

10
Review Question
  • What is one reason why Johns Gospel differs so
    dramatically from the other three?

11
Answer 2
  • One reason for Johns different approach is that
he writes at a later date and addresses mature
    Christians.

12
Review Question
  • List four ways that Johns Gospel differs from
    the synoptic Gospels.

13
Answer 3
  • He rarely uses the story format.
  • John has Jesus identify himself with Gods sacred
    name I am.
  • John identifies Jesus, almost immediately, as the
    Messiah.
  • John substitutes eternal life in place of the
    Kingdom of God.
