  • The Inca Empire covers much or Ecuador, Peru,
    Bolivia, Chile, and parts of Columbia and
    Argentina
  • In the 12th century, tribes spread from their
    base in the mountains of Southern Peru, to the
    fertile Cuzco Valley.
  • Their main land was very mountainous

  • At its peak, over 6million people
  • At its peak of existence, it was the largest
    nation on Earth

  • Instead of writing, sometimes used hand weaving
  • Spoke Quechua language
  • Called the Quechua people

  • Conquered by Spain in the 16th century

Customary Dress
  • A person of importance wore a llawtu, a series of
    cords wrapped around the head
  • Awaska was used for household use (Usually
    made from llama wool)
  • Qunpi was a finer cloth ( Usually made from
    alpaca wool)

  • Unlike the Mayans, they did not use logs to
    roll large stones
  • Used earthen ramps to raise large stones
  • Did not use iron tools, rulers, or the square

    dead ones, in case the returning spirit needed

  • Held yearly on June 21
  • At sunrise, everyone had to greet the sun god
    with the muchay, sending forth resounding
    kissed offered symbolically with the fingertips.
    Then they would sing.

  • Often had years of Drought
  • Inca means king or ruler
  • Believed in reincarnation, those who obeyed
    the Inca moral code, went to live in the suns
    warmth. Others spent their eternal days inside
    the cold earth.
