7Direct and Reported Speech
Newspaper reports often contain quotations from
witnesses or experts. When a reporter uses the
exact words that a person has said, they use
quotation marks. This is called direct
speech. Gloucester fan, Stuart Allen, said I
was at the match yesterday, you would never have
realised he was seriously hurt. Im devastated.
When a reporter summarises something a person
has said into their own words, they do not use
quotation marks. This is called reported
speech. Browns doctor at the hospital confirmed
that the cause of death was a ruptured kidney.
