Title: Land Treatment at the Brown Wood Preserving Superfund Site, Live Oak, Florida

1
Land Treatment at the Brown Wood Preserving
Superfund Site, Live Oak, Florida
2
Location
  • 2 miles west of the city of Live Oak in Suwanee
    County, Florida

3
Site History
  • 1948-1978- Lumber treatment facility, mainly with
    creosote
  • -pressure treated in 2
    cylinders discharged to a lagoon
  • 1982 determined to be contaminated with high
    levels of organics
  • (primarily Polynuclear Aromatic
    Hydrocarbons (PAHs)
  • found in creosote)
  • -placed on the National Priorities
    List (NPL) by the EPA
  • 1987 Interim removal activities took place
  • - Removal and treatment of lagoon
    water
  • Stockpiling contaminated soil for
    Land Treatment

4
Alternative Solutions
  • No action
  • On/ off site Incineration
  • Land Treatment
  • Biological Treatment

5
Solution
  • Land Treatment was selected by EPA
  • Clean up goal
  • - reduce the concentration of Total
    Carcinogenic Indicator
  • Chemicals (TCICs) to below 100mg/kg
  • - TCICs- 6 Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons
    selected by EPA
  • Must be achieved within 2 years of operation

6
Land Treatment
  • Also known as Land Farming
  • Contaminated soils are mixed with soil
    amendments, e.g nutrients
  • Contaminated degradation by microbiological
    processes and oxidation
  • Construction of Land Treatment Area (LTA)
    involves
  • - LTA, with clay liner
  • - Stockpile area
  • - Retention pond
  • - Portable Irrigation System

7
System Operation
  • Performed in 3 lifts
  • Divided into 8 half- acre subplots
  • Sample every 3 months before next lift is placed

8
System Operation (Contd)
  • First lift- Jan 1989
  • - Approx one foot in depth irrigated and
    fertilized
  • - March 1- March 15, 1989- inoculated with
    PAH degrading microorganisms
  • - growing seed cultures (plants)
  • - sprayed onto the soil
  • Second lift- Sep 1989
  • Third lift March 1990
  • Same treatment process used

9
System Operation (Contd)
  • July 1990 goal achieved
  • - 8100 cubic yards of soil were treated
  • - 6 months ahead of the 2 year timeframe
  • Revegetation
  • - 90 of the former LTA was covered with
    native
  • grasses by March 1992
  • Total Treatment cost - 565,400

10
Performance Observation and lessons learned
  • Goal was achieved earlier than expected
  • Capable of supporting vegetation
  • One of the early applications of land treatment
    of creosote
