ProtistsUnit 3

2
Pond water video reflection- IN
  • After watching the video clip Pond Water
    respond to the following
  • List describe three things you already know
about protists, algae and fungi. List describe
three things you would like to know about these
    topics.

3
General Characteristics of protists
  • 1. Eukaryotes
  • 2. Plant-like, animal-like or fungus-like
  • 3. Grouped by how they feed heterotrophs,
    autotrophs and decomposers
  • 4. Protista the very first
  • 5. Uni and Multicellular
  • 6. Some Colonial
  • Count how many protists in the picture are
    autotrophs.
  • How do you know which ones to count?

4
Animal-like protists
How do you know this one is not a protist?
  • Heterotrophic
  • AKA protozoans
  • Unicellular
  • Classified by method of movement
  • Some are immobile and they are parasitic

How do these move?
5
Plant-like Fungus-like Protists
  • AKA mold
  • A water mold caused Great Potato Famine causing
large increases in Irish immigration to US
  • Classified according to reproductive structures
    and habitat
  • water slime molds
  • AKA- algae
  • Classified according to color
  • Uni and multicellular
  • Autotrophic
  • Ex. Volvox

Is it a plant?
6
Phyla Sarcodina
  • Move with pseudopods false feet
  • Heterotrophic-they engulf food (endocytosis) with
    pseudopods forming food vacuoles
  • Freshwater or marine, moist soil
  • Usually harmless
  • Reproduce asexually by splitting in half binary
    fission
  • Ex. Amoeba and Forminaferan

Binary fission

Amoeba
Label your amoeba on your notes!!!

8
Phyla Zooflagellates
  • Have one or more flagella which move back and
    forth
  • Absorb food
  • Some decomposers, some parasites
  • Live in moist environments, freshwater or host
    cell

9
Ciliophora
  • Move by cilia
  • Heterotrophic
  • Freshwater or marine
  • Ex. Paramecium

10
Phylum Sporozoa
  • No movement in and of itself. Uses host system
    for movement Ex. Circulatory sys.
  • Heterotrophic parasite
  • Habitat host
  • Ex. Plasmodium

11
Beneficial Protists
Trichonympha
  • Can be free-living flagellate which lives in
termite gut helping them to break down the
    cellulose in wood
  • What type of symbiosis exists between the
    termite and the protist??

12
Quiz 1 Protozoans
  • All protists are ___.
  • a. eukaryotes b. photosynthetic
  • c. prokaryotes
  • Animal-like protists are called ___.
  • a. algae b. decomposers c. protozoans
  • An amoeba moves and engulfs its food with ___.
  • a. cilia b. pseudopods c. flagella
  • 4. A ___ pumps out excess water.
  • a. contractile vacuole b. food vacuole
  • c. water vacuole
  • A zooflagellate uses ___ to move from place to
    place.
  • a. cilia b. pseudopod c. flagella
