An Airbus plane operated by Lufthansa's
Germanwings budget airline crashed in southern
France on Tuesday en route from Barcelona to
Duesseldorf. French Prime Minister Manuel Valls
said he understood between 142 and 150 people
were on board and feared dead. "The cause is at
present unknown," he told reporters.

  • Two years after she underwent a double mastectomy
to cut her cancer risk, actress and U.S. envoy
Angelina Jolie has had surgery to remove her
ovaries and fallopian tubes for the same reason,
she wrote in the New York Times Tuesday. Jolie,
39, carries a mutation of the BRCA1 gene, which
sharply increases her risk of developing breast
cancer and ovarian cancer. Her mother was
diagnosed with the latter at age 49 and died
seven years later. She lost her grandmother and
aunt to cancer as well. "It is not possible to
remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone
to cancer," she said. "I will look for natural
ways to strengthen my immune system. I feel
feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making
for myself and my family. I know my children will
never have to say, 'Mom died of ovarian cancer.
  • Debra Milke spent 22 years on death row,
convicted of conspiring with two other men to
kill her son allegedly for an insurance payout.
On Monday, a judge ruled that the Arizona woman
is innocent and dismissed all charges against
her. This makes Milke only the second woman
exonerated from death row in the United States.
More importantly, the judge's decision finally
clears Milke after years of legal back-and-forth
in a case where she steadfastly maintained her
innocence. Key to the case's dismissal was
prosecutorial misconduct, mainly that of a
detective, Armando Saldate, who said Milke
confessed to the crime to him -- even though
there was no witness or recording. Prosecutors
withheld from the jury Saldate's personnel record
which showed instances of misconduct in other
cases, including lying under oath. The two men
with whom Milke was accused of conspiring were
tried separately and are still on death row.
  • American officials have accused Israel of spying
on diplomatic talks between the United States and
Iran and then feeding sensitive information
back to Barack Obamas political opponents in
America. Israel, which says the allegation are
utterly false, is opposed to an emerging deal
on Irans nuclear program, as are most members of
the Republican Party the sworn political
opponents of Barack Obamas Democratic Party.
According to US newspaper the Wall Street
    Journal, US spies monitoring Israeli
    communications claim to have intercepted
information which they allege could only have
come from spying on American talks about Irans
    nuclear program.
