  • This region is a world of water, and includes
    Australia and three groups of islands

Australia
  • Australia is the largest land mass in the region.
    The smallest are the islands of Micronesia
    islands of coral reefs called atolls.
  • Early History
  • Australias first people were called aborigines
    and supposedly arrived to the region around
    40,000 years ago. In 1606, long after Europeans
    had sailed to the New World (North America), the
    Dutch (Holland) reached Australia.
  • In 1770, Captain James Cook, an English explorer,
    sailed along the eastern coast of Australia and
    claimed the land for the United Kingdom. A
    colony was established in 1788.

New Zealand
  • The first people were called the Maoris, and
    arrived around A.D. 750. The seafarers reached
    the islands in 100 ft. long ocean going canoes.

Early Years
  • In the early years, whaling was very important to
    the region.
  • In 1851, gold was discovered in Australia (2
    years after California). In only 2 years, the
    population doubled.
  • Over the years, the United States and several
    European nations took control of many islands.
