• USSR threatened by USA rebuilding Europe.

• USSR Blocks goods to Eastern Berlin.
• Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech.

Berlin

• The City of Berlin was split between France, UK,
  USSR, and USA at wars end.
• Located in USSR section.
• Soviets refuse to allow USA to supply West
  Berlin-Berlin Road block-Tanks block trucks.
• USA counters move by Air lifting goods to people
  of West Berlin.-Planes
• Planes fly over Tanks.
• Both sides wanted to hold firm, neither wanted to
  start WWIII.

  alliances based on communism and democracy.
• NATO- North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the US
  and its allies.
• Warsaw Pact- the USSR and its allies.
• Truman Doctrine- President Truman outlines his
  policy of not allowing communism to
  spread-containment. The free world looks to us

The Proxy Wars

• Proxy a person authorized to act for another
• Proxy War a series of local conflicts during the
  Cold War in which the US and USSR indirectly
  opposed each other instead of actually fighting
  head-to-head

Korean War

• Korea Split between communist North and
  Democratic South at end of war
• IN 1950, North attacks south
• UN comes to aid of South
• Raises international army led by USA
• USSR was not at meeting to block motion.
• USA invades North of SK troops, and flanks
  Communists
• Truman orders General Macarthur to pursue
  communists into North Against will of UN
• China comes to the aid of North Korea, and pushes
  US back south.
• Macarthur suggests using atomic bombs, then plans
  to bomb China- is fired by Truman.
• War ends in 1953 with a cease fire at the same
  place where it started.
