Italy and Germany Formed Nations
  • Italy formed a united kingdom under their leader
    named Cavour
  • Under the leadership of Otto Von Bismarck,
    Germany was unified and with this unification and
    rise in power, the balance of power in Europe
    collapse.

WWI Titles (1914-1918)
  • Most of Europe became involved in WWI and most of
    European economies centered on providing
    resources for the war. This is the reason why
    WWI was also called The Great War and the Total
    War

  • The M in MAIN stands for Militarism. What does
    it really mean?
  • It is a race to arms
  • It is a race to built larger armies
  • It is a race to have mobilization plans ready to
    make sure you are ready to move

  • Germanys Plan of Attack
  • Attack France on the west
  • Rush to fight Russia in the east
  • This plan failed
  • It caused Germany to split up its army and have
    to fight on Two fronts

Trench Warfare
  • Fighting from ditches dug in the dirt along the
    war front
  • Muddy, rat invested, cold, food scarce

New Ways of Fighting
  • Fighting in the air using planes
  • Submarines or U-boats
  • Machine guns
  • Poison gas

Total War
  • WWI was a total war which meant that all the
    countries in the war devoted all their resources
    and economies to the war.
  • Rationing took place, which was a limiting of
    goods people could buy, so that most of the goods
    could go towards the war
  • Propaganda also took place, which was an
    advertising tactic used to encourage men to join
    the army to create pride of country, or to bash
    the other side.

  • While the men were fighting in the war, what did
    the women do?
  • Filled jobs previously held by men
  • Built tanks, plowed fields, paved streets, ran
    hospitals
  • Worked as teachers and nurses

  • The Communists take over the country
  • The Allies continue to pound Germany and
    eventually wins WWI
  • An armistice or an agreement to stop fighting is
    signed on November 1918

    peace was held at the Palace of Versailles

    allowed people to decide what government they
    wished to live

  • Created a League of Nations to keep peace among
    nations
  • Punished Germany
  • Lost land
  • Made to pay for the cost of the war
  • War Guilt clause the SOLE blame for the war
    was placed on Germany

Effects of the Treaty
  • The War Guilt clause left a legacy of
    bitterness and hatred in the hearts of the German
    people. This eventually led to WWII
