Why does it MATTER????
  • Matter- anything that has volume and mass.
  • EVERYTHING that surrounds you is composed of
    matter!
  • There are 4 States of matter

7
1. Solids
  • Examples flowers, wood, the chair you are
    sitting in.

8
2. Liquids
  • Examples- water, Gatorade, soda

9
3. Gases
  • Examples- the sun is made up of many gases, smoke
from a fire, water vapor in clouds

10
4. Plasma
  • A gas that is composed of free-floating ions
  • Example solar winds

11
What makes up matter?
  • All matter is made up of elements.
  • Elements are made up of atoms.
  • Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and
    electrons.

12
A few Definitions
Matter ? elements ? atoms ? particles (protons,
neutrons, and electrons)
  • Matter is anything that has volume and mass.
Everything in the physical world that surrounds
    you is composed of matter.
  • An element is a substance that cannot be broken
down into simpler substances by physical or
    chemical means.
  • Atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter
and are made up of protons, neutrons, and
    electrons.

13
How do we organize Elements?
  • There are 92 elements that occur naturally
  • Other elements have been produced in labs.
  • Each element is given a chemical symbol
  • ex Hhydrogen, Cucopper
  • Elements are classified and arranged according to
    their chemical properties

The Periodic Table is made up of Elements!
Lets take a closer look

15
Elements are made up of atoms..Lets take a
closer look!
A particle with approximately the same mass as a
proton
A particle with a mass and a POSITIVE charge
Made up of protons and neutrons
A tiny particle with little mass and a NEGATIVE
charge
16
Atomic Number (number of protons OR electrons in
an atoms nucleus)
Round this number when determining of neutrons
Atomic Mass (sum of protons AND neutrons)
Why dont we include electrons in the atomic mass?

Practice!
  • 1. What is Irons atomic number?
  • 26
  • 2. How many electrons does it have?
  • 26
  • 3. What is its atomic mass?
  • 55.845
  • 4. How many neutrons does it have?

Bell Work 8/26/13
  • 1. How many states of matter are there?
  • 4
  • 2. What are the states of matter?
  • Solids, liquids, gases, and plasma
  • 3. How many naturally occurring elements are
    there?
  • 92

Dont forget to write the question too!!
21
The Periodic Table of Elements
Elements are arranged in columns and rows
22
Columns
  • The vertical (up and down) columns of the
periodic table are called groups or families.
  • Elements in the same group or family have similar
    characteristics or properties.

23
Label each column on your Periodic Table
24
Rows
  • The horizontal rows of the periodic table are
    called periods.
  • Elements in a period are NOT alike in properties.

25
Label each row on your Periodic Table
26
Groups/Families
Periods
  • All the elements can be classified as
  • Nonmetals
  • Metals

27

Non-Metals
28
Quick Quiz (Uno)
  • What element is Group 2 and Period 4?
  • Calcium
  • Is it classified as a nonmetal, metal or
    metalloid?
  • Metal

29
Quick Quiz (Dos)
  • What element is Group 8 and Period 4?
  • Iron
  • Is it classified as a nonmetal, metal or
    metalloid?
  • Metal

30
Quick Quiz (Tres)
  • What element is Group 14 and Period 5?
  • Tin
  • 2. What is that elements atomic number?
  • 50
  • 3. How many electrons does it have?
  • 50
  • 4. What is its atomic mass?
  • 118.710
