Title: Vocabulary Essay

1
Vocabulary Essay
  • Model Sentences

2
Unit 3 Compound Sentences
  • Compound Sentence contains two independent
clauses joined by a COMMA and a COORDINATING
CONJUNCTION (for, and but, or, yet, so).
  • Examples Alice studied for the vocabulary
test, so she received a perfect score.
  • Jerry did not study for the test, yet he
still managed to earn a B.
  • Lee studied for the test, but he still only
    earned a C.

3
Unit 3 - Compound/Complex Sentences
  • Compound/Complex Sentences contain two or more
independent clauses and one or more subordinate
    clauses.
  • Common subordinate clause words include after,
although, as, as if, as long as, as soon as,
because, before, if, since, so that , than,
though, unless, until, when, whenever, while.

4
Compound/Complex Examples
  • Although she had cheerleading practice until
late, Alice studied for the vocabulary test, so
    she received a perfect score.
  • Because he had to work late at Karns, Jerry did
not study for the test, yet he still managed to
    earn a B.
  • Since he was almost on the ineligiblity list, Lee
studied for the test, but he still only earned a
    C.

5
Assignment
  • In your vocab homework for Unit 3, mark four (4)
of your sentences with an asterisk().
  • Two of the sentences must be identified as
compound, and two of the sentences must be
    identified by compound/complex.
  • Correctly writing and identifying these sentences
is worth five points of the homework grade.

6
Assistance
  • In your grammar book, see pages 94-96 for
additional examples of sentence types and pages
90-91 for additional examples of subordinate
    clauses..
  • Come see me before the homework is due. Do not
drop off work for me to pre-correct.

7
Periodic Sentence
  • The main idea or most important information is
not revealed until the end of the sentence.
  • Example That morning, after a longer than
normal bus ride on icy roads, we made it safely
    to school.

8
Assignment
  • Make four of the vocab sentences for Unit 4
    PERIODIC.
  • Mark them with an asterisk.

9
Balanced Sentence
  • Similar to parallel structure, the balanced
sentence features two similar elements that
    balance each other.
  • Example The students reveled in the snow day
the teachers reveled in the student-less day.
  • Note that the two independent clauses are of the
same pattern subject, verb (same verb!), and
    prepositional phrase.

10
Assignment
  • Write four balanced sentences for the next vocab
    unit.
  • Mark the balanced sentences with an asterisk.
