Closed-Ended Questions
  • Encourage a short or single-word answer
  • Not helpful to ask during an interview

Open-Ended Questions
  • Give the interviewee an opportunity to provide
    insight and explanation
  • Begin with words or phrases such as
  • Why
  • How
  • Tell me about
  • Often not technically a question but a statement
    which implicitly asks for a response
  • Cannot be answered with a simple yes or no

Closed-Ended versus Open-Ended
  • Do you get along well with your parents?
  • Who will you vote for this election?
  • Is there any other information you need?
  • Tell me about your relationship with your
    parents.
  • What do you think about the candidates in this
    election?
  • How will this information help you?
