Title: Classification of Matter

1
Classification of Matter
  • Elements, Mixtures, and Compounds

2
What is Matter?
  • Anything that takes up space.

3
Classification of Matter
  • Substance
  • A material with a constant composition. (It is
the same no matter where it is found.)
  • Sodium Chloride, Water, and Oxygen are substances
because they are the same no matter where you
    find them.

4
Substances
  • All elements and all compounds are substances!

5
Elements
  • Elements are substances that are made up of one
    atom.
  • 113 elements exist, most are metals.
  • Found on the Periodic Table
  • Examples of Elements Gold, Silver, Hydrogen

6
Compounds
  • Compounds are substances that are made up of more
    than one type of atom.
  • Water, for example, is made of hydrogen and
    oxygen atoms.
  • Compounds are chemically combined. They can be
    broken down!

7
Examples of Compounds
  • Water
  • Carbon Dioxide
  • Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)

8
Mixtures
  • Mixtures are made up of 2 or more substances that
    are combined.
  • Composition of the mixture will vary with sample.
  • Can be Homogeneous and Heterogeneous

9
Homogeneous Mixtures
  • Any material that is the same throughout.
  • They are evenly mixed but not chemically
    combined.
  • Each sample appears to be identical to the other.

10
Examples of Homogeneous Mixtures
  • Salt water
  • Pure air

11
Heterogeneous Mixtures
  • Two or more substances that are NOT mixed evenly.
  • You can see the different parts of the mixture.
  • Can be separated easily.

12
Examples of Heterogeneous Mixtures
  • Sand
  • Soil
  • Chicken soup
  • Pizza
  • Chocolate chip cookies

13
Solutions
  • Special type of homogeneous mixture.
  • Two parts mix physically not chemically.
  • Two parts Solute and Solvent
  • Solute what gets dissolved
  • Solvent what does the dissolving.

14
Solution Examples
  • SALT WATER
  • Salt is the solute (what gets dissolved)
  • Water is the solvent(what does the dissolving)
