Title: Matter and Mixtures

1
Matter and Mixtures
  • Unit 3

2
Matter
  • What is matter?
  • Matter is anything that has mass and takes up
    space.
  • Examples of matter
  • Air
  • Textbook
  • TV
  • What is not matter?
  • Forces (gravity, magnetism, buoyancy, etc.)
  • Energies (sound, light, electricity, etc.)

3
Chemicals
  • What is a chemical?
  • As a class, discuss the meaning of a chemical.
  • When you think of chemicals, we often only think
of dangerous substances. These are chemicals,
but actually we come in contact with chemicals
    everyday!
  • All matter is made up of chemicals!!

4
Chemicals
  • Chemicals can be classified under two types
  • Natural Chemicals
  • Manufactured Chemicals
  • Natural Chemicals
  • These chemicals occur naturally on Earth.
  • For example, years ago, people used to go to
river beds panning for gold. This gold formed
    naturally.
  • Manufactured Chemicals
  • These chemicals are man-made.
  • Today, we mix natural gold with other chemicals
to make jewelry. This jewelry is considered
    manufactured.

5
Natural Chemicals
  • Which natural chemical do you think is the most
    important on Earth?
  • Water!!
  • List as many uses of water that you can think of
    in 30 seconds. Start now!
  • With so many uses of water, it is important to
keep it from getting contaminated (polluted).
  • How do we pollute our water?
  • How could we prevent this pollution?

6
Mixtures
  • What are mixtures?
  • Mixtures are formed when two or more substances
    combine.
  • List as many different mixtures as you can in 30
    seconds.
  • GO!

7
Mixtures
  • What do these mixtures have in common?
  • Salt water
  • Kool-Aid
  • Brass
  • How are these mixtures different from the ones
    given below?
  • Pepper and water
  • Orange juice with pulp
  • Chocolate chip cookies

8
3 Types of Mixtures
  • Although your text only discusses two types of
    mixtures, there are actually three.
  • In the following website, these three types of
mixtures are discussed and an activity follows.
  • http//www.coolschool.ca/lor/SC7/unit6/U06L03.htm
  • In your notebooks, write the definitions of the
three types of mixtures. Give an example of
    each.
  • Complete the Cool School worksheet on mixtures.

9
Mixtures
  • Your textbook describes two types of mixtures
  • Heterogeneous mixtures
  • A combination of two or more different types of
matter that retain their own properties and that
    can be detected quite easily.
  • Does this sound familiar?
  • A heterogeneous mixture is the scientific term
    for a mechanical mixture.

10
Mixtures
  • Homogeneous mixtures
  • A combination of two or more different types of
matter that appear to be the same throughout the
mixture and have the same properties.
  • Does this sound familiar?
  • A homogeneous mixture is the scientific term for
    a solution.
