Title: STD

1
STDS
  • BACTERIAL

2
BACTERIAL STDs
  • Chlamydia (1,030,911)
  • The most common STD
  • Caused by several microorganisms
  • The rates are highest among people 15-19 yrs old
  • 70 of females and 10-15 of men have no symptoms

3
HOW IT IS CONTRACTED?
  • ANAL
  • ORAL
  • VAGINAL

4
Symptoms include
  • Males
  • Unusual discharge of fluids from penis
  • Painful, burning, or frequent urination
  • Females
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain in pelvis
  • Bleeding between periods

5
Affects on baby
  • Premature delivery
  • Eye infections
  • Respiratory Tract infections
  • Chlamydia is leading cause of infant pneumonia
    and conjunctivitis

6
Diagnosis/Treatment
  • A laboratory test diagnoses chlamydia
  • Antibiotics are used to cure
  • If left untreated can cause sterility (unable to
reproduce) due to scar tissue on either fallopian
    tubes or vas deferens

7
Bacterial STDs
  • Gonorrhea (700,000)
  • 2nd most common STD
  • Caused by bacteria (warm, moist areas)
  • Usually asymptomatic (without symptoms)
  • Can cause crippling (damage to heart, joints)

8
How is it contracted
  • Anal
  • Oral
  • Vaginal

9
Symptoms include
  • Males
  • A thick yellowish discharge from penis
  • Burning during urinating
  • 10 of men are asymptomatic
  • Females
  • Yellow-green discharge from vagina
  • Abdominal pain
  • Frequent urination, burning during urination
  • 80 of women are asymptomatic

10
Affects on baby
  • Premature labor
  • Stillbirth
  • Permanent blindness

11
Diagnosis/Treatment
  • Medical testing
  • Examining discharge from penis under microscope
  • Examining culture test of vagina under microscope
  • If left untreated can cause sterility, damage to
joints, heart tissue and other organs

12
Bacterial STDs
  • Syphilis (36,000 cases in 2006)
  • Disease caused by bacterium (spirochete)
  • 4 stages
  • If left untreated can cause DEATH

13
How is it contracted?
  • Anal
  • Oral
  • Vaginal

14
Symptoms include
  • Primary stage (10-90 days after contact)
  • Chancre sore on penis/vagina
  • Secondary stage (1-5 months after infection)
  • Joint pain, swollen lymph nodes, nausea,
    headache, loss of appetite
  • Highly contagious rash

15
Symptoms continued
  • Latent stage (2 or 3 yrs after infection)
  • Symptoms disappear
  • Neurosyphilis stage (years after)
  • Bacteria begins to attack heart, blood vessels,
    bones, liver, and CNS
  • Can cause blindness and insanity

16
Affects on baby
  • Congenital syphilis (develops after 5th month of
pregnancy) (symptoms begin 3 to four weeks after
    birth)
  • Miscarriages more common
  • Stillbirth more common
  • Deafness, damage to bone, teeth, and liver

17
Diagnosis/Treatment
  • A blood test (VDRL)
  • Some states require this particular blood test
    before marriage
  • Penicillin or tetracycline are treatments
  • Any damage done cannot be reversed-what is done
    is done
