Course Assessment at Higher
  • Course Assessment at National 5, Higher and
    Advanced Higher assesses Added Value
  • Courses at Higher are normally assessed by one or
    two Components
  • Courses at Higher are graded A D, as at present
  • Controlled Assessment of setting, conducting and
    marking
  • For Modern Languages there are 2 Components a
    Question Paper and a Performance

Higher Reading
  • Reading
  • One written text in the modern language of
    approximately 600 words (650-800 Chinese
    characters).
  • The text will be based on one or two of the
    following Contexts society, learning,
    employability or culture.
  • Overall Purpose Question 2 marks, unsupported
  • Translation of a section of the text into
    English
  • Questions worth 20 marks and Translation 10 marks

Higher Directed Writing
  • Candidates must address FOUR bullet points from
    one of the chosen stimuli.
  • The question paper will be externally assessed in
    accordance with pegged Marking Instructions
  • Candidates will write between 120-150 words
    (150-180 Chinese characters). The  Directed
    Writing will be worth 10 marks.   
  • The Reading and Directed Writing question paper
    is worth 40 marks and the duration will be 1 hour
    40 minutes.

Higher Listening
  • A Monologue and Conversation in the modern
    language from same context
  • Linked thematically (contexts not sampled in
    reading)
  • The questions will be worth a total of 20 marks
    8 marks in the monologue and 12 marks in the
    conversation
  • Overall purpose question 1 mark, supported

Higher Writing
  • One written text in response to stimulus from
    Listening theme
  • Limited number of questions set
  • Candidates will write between 120-150 words
    (150-280 Chinese characters)..
  • 10 marks awarded using pegged Marking
    Instructions

Higher Performance
  • A presentation in the modern language
  • On one of the four contexts (society, learning,
    employability or culture)
  • Followed by conversation using detailed and
    complex language
  • The conversation will follow on from the context
    of the presentation and develop into at least one
    other context. 
  • 30 marks
