The 1960s
  • The first global network of computers was in
    1962, at the Defense Advanced Research Projects
    Agency (DARPA).

The 1970s
  • The Internet was first known as ARPANET because
    it was developed under a contract led by the
    Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA).
  • E-mail was adapted for ARPANET in 1972.
  • Usenet was started in 1979 and led to the
    development of newsgroups.

The 1980s
  • Commands became a lot easier for people to learn
    to use the Net.
  • Brewster Kahle at Thinking Machines, Corp.,
    developed a Wide Area Information Server (WAIS)
    which indexed the full text of files in a
    database and allowed searches of the files.

The 1990s
  • In 1991, the first friendly interface to the
    Internet was developed at the University of
    Minnesota.
  • Mosaic, a graphical browser, was developed in
    1993 by Marc Andreessen at the National Center
    for Supercomputing Applications.

  • The Internet was initially funded by the
    government so it was limited to research,
    education and government uses.
  • Local dialup services connected to the Internet
    in 1992. Delphi was the first national commercial
    online service to offer Internet access to its
    dialup subscribers. It offered an e-mail
    connection in July 1992 and full Internet service
    in November 1992.

The 1990s continued
  • All limitations on commercial use disappeared in
    May, 1995 when all Web traffic started relying on
    commercial networks such as AOL, Prodigy, and
    CompuServe.

The 2000s
  • The current trend with major implications for the
    future is the growth of high-speed connections.
  • New technologies such as cable modems, digital
    subscriber lines (DSL) and satellite broadcast
    are much faster and are widely available and
    growing fast.

  • Router - an electronic device that connects two
    or more networks.
  • ISP Internet Service Provider. Examples AOL,
    Time Warner Roadrunner, SBC Global.
  • Search Engine - helps users find web pages on a
    given subject using keywords. Examples Yahoo,
    Google, AltaVista, Lycos.
  • Modem enable data transmission from analog to
    digital.

  • DSL Digital Subscriber Line, is broadband
    Internet access through telephone lines.
  • SPAM unsolicited e-mail.
  • Banner Advertising - advertising scrolled across
    the top of internet sites.
  • URL Universal Resource Locator the address"
    of a webpage typed into the browser to go to
    specific sites.
