The Bering Strait
  • Native Americans have been inhabiting the land of
    the Americas for hundreds of years.
  • Many historians say that they migrated to the
    Americas from Asia, crossing the Bering Strait.
  • Native Americans had hundreds of tribes and
    cultures all across the continents of North and
    South America.

Columbus Many Changes
  • 1492
  • Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
  • Christopher Columbus left Spain looking for
    spices.
  • Searching for a shortcut to China and the East
    Indies, Columbus sailed west.
  • Europeans did not know that the Americas existed.
  • Columbus sails to America 1492.
  • Why did Columbus travel?
  • Wealth
  • Fame

Claiming American lands
  • Europeans were excited about a new land.
  • Spain, England (also called Britain), and France
    set up colonies in the Americas in the 1500s and
    1700s.
  • Why did they want the colonies?
  • Natural resources!! Timber for ships, cotton,
    tobacco, etc
  • A colony is a territory controlled by another
    country. (write at bottom of page)
  • The Pilgrims land at Plymouth Rock in
    Massachusetts. 1620

  • The French and Indian War is fought between
    England and France over who will control the area
    of the United States.

  • Like taxes on tea!

The Revolutionary War
  • The Revolutionary War begins.
  • American colonists write the Declaration of
    Independence and send it to England because they
    no longer want to be ruled by them.
  • July 4th 1776 (memorize)

The New Nation
  • The American colonists won and named their new,
    independent country, The United States of
    America.
  • George Washington became the first president.

The Louisiana Purchase
  • Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President, doubled the
    size of the United States in 1803 by purchasing
    the Louisiana Territory from France.
  • Lewis and Clark explored the land.

Gold and the 49ers
  • Gold is discovered in California and many people
    move in search of riches.

Industrialization
  • The United States became more industrialized
    especially in the Northeast, and millions of
    immigrants arrive here for better jobs,
    opportunities, and freedom.

Cultural Diversity
  • Millions of immigrants came to America searching
    for JOBS, FREEDOM, AND GREATER OPPORTUNITIES.
  • As a result, the U.S. is very culturally diverse
    today.

The Violent Question
  • With more people in the country, more territories
    became states.
  • Will those states allow slavery?
  • The Southern states thought that it should be a
    state decision whether to allow slavery or not.
  • The Northern states thought that slavery should
    only be allowed in the Southern states not the
    new states.
  • Civil War was fought from 1861-1865.

  • October 1929Stock Market crashed. Many
    people lost their savings in the banks and their
    jobs.
  • A depression is a severe downturn in business
    activity. (Many people get laid off and companies
    go out of business)
  • A very difficult time in the world.

World War II
  • Adolf Hitler comes to power in Germany and six
    years later invades neighboring countries (1939).
  • Japan also invades neighboring China.
  • US gets involved after Japan bombs Pearl Harbor
    (Dec. 7th, 1941)
  • War ends with atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima
    and Nagasaki, Japan.

Cold War begins
  • A few years after World War II, there were two
    countries with atomic bombs USA (democratic)
    and Soviet Union (Communist)
  • The Cold War was a period of high tensions
    between the USA and Soviet Union.

    occurred

    Democratic South Vietnam and USA)
  • Cuban Missile Crisis (1962)

  • In 1991, the Communist country of the Soviet
    Union (USSR) lost control and the country divided
    into 15 independent countries.

  • Terrorists attack World Trade Center in New York,
    the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and hijack a
    plane that crashes in a field in Pennsylvania.
