Many famous Roman buildings have used stone from
the Colosseum, including St Peters. 2/3 of the
original building have been taken.
There were 80 entrances, 4 of which were reserved
for VIPs
The Colosseum was originally called the Flavian
Amphitheatre after Vespasians family name
The Colosseum was constructed around 70AD on the
orders of the Emperor Vespasian
Members of the audience could enter or leave via
the vomitoria from the Latin word to spew out
It could seat around 50,000 spectators
Its circumference was 545 metres, and its four
storeys rose to a height of 57 metres
The central arena was 86x54 metres and covered in
sand. The Latin for sand is arena

    Gladiator and produce a factfile on how
    authentic his depiction of the Colosseum and
    Roman entertainment really is. Include stills
    from the movie or examples of entertainments from
    Roman mosaics or frescoes.
