Title: Functional Kitchens

1
Functional Kitchens
  • Housing and Interiors
  • 7.01 Apply the elements of a functional kitchen

2
Work Triangle
  • Is formed by imaginary lines that connect the
    sink, range, refrigerator.

3
Convection vs. Conventional
  • Convection
  • Uses circulated air and heat.
  • A convection oven uses a fan which is usually
located on the back side of the oven. The purpose
of the fan is to force the heated air inside of
the oven and circulate it around the item being
cooked. The heated air is constantly pushed over
and around the food, and therefore a convection
oven cooks food much faster than a conventional
    oven.
  • Conventional
  • Most common types of household ovens
  • Conventional oven, air is not forced throughout
the oven on a constant basis with the aid of a
    fan
  • The heat is blocked by the pots and pans in the
    oven.

4
Chest freezer
  • Uses less electricity because less cold air
escapes when the door is opened.

5
Gas vs. Electric
  • Gas Range
  • Regulates the heat and saves energy.
  • Has the flame.
  • Electric
  • Currents flow through to produce heat.
  • Much cheaper to purchase than a gas.

6
Kitchen shapes/layouts
  • One-wall, L-shaped, U-shaped, Peninsula,

7
One-Wall
  • Where all appliances are on one wall. Cabinets
and countertop space is also on the same wall.
  • Does not take up a lot of space.

8
L-shaped
  • Is in the shape of an L.

9
U-shaped
  • Is shaped like a U. If the kitchen is large you
have more space to walk around and you also have
    more countertop and cabinet space.

10
Peninsula
  • When an island is anchored to a wall or line of
cabinets, this is called a peninsula kitchen
    plan.

11
Corridor
  • The two walls in the kitchen which run parallel
to each other. All appliances are across from
    one another.

12
Refrigerators
  • Determining the type of fridge you want depends
on the amount of storage space needed.
  • 16-cubic-foot fridge is good for two people.
  • 18-cubic-foot fridge is ideal for a family that
shops often or eats out a lot.

13
Todays assignment
  • Complete the Appliance worksheet.
  • Draw a kitchen that we discussed today. Make
sure you put in a work triangle when designing
    the kitchen.
