1
DNA Forensic Evidence Lab
2
DNA Forensic Science Lab
  • Predictions
  • Is DNA found in the food we eat?
  • Where exactly do you think DNA is located?
  • Can DNA be extracted?
  • Why is DNA extraction an important skill for a
    forensic scientist?

3
(No Transcript)
4
How does forensic id work?
  • Every species has their own DNA sequence
  • Scan 13 different regions (loci) when creating a
    human DNA profile
  • Human DNA ProfileDNA Fingerprint

5
Examples of DNA uses in forensic science
  • DNA left at a crime scene
  • Exonerate persons who are wrongfully accused of
    crimes
  • Identify crime and catastrophe victims
  • Establish paternity and other family relationships

6
Is dNA effective in id of persons?
  • DNA id is effective if used intelligently.
  • Example Assume that type O blood is found at
crime scene. Type O occurs in about 45 of
Americans. If investigators type only for ABO,
finding the suspect with type O blood doesnt
    reveal much.
  • Its usually a chain of biological and physical
evidence like hair, footprints that leads to the
    making of the match.

7
What are some of the dna technologies used in
forensics?
  • RFLP Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism
  • PCR Analysis Polymerase Chain Reaction
  • STR Analysis Short tandem repeat technology
  • Mitochondrial DNA Analysis related to the DNA
loci passed on from the mother
  • Y-chromosome analysis passed on loci from the
    father

8
Interesting Uses of DNA in forensic Identification
  • Identifying September 11th victims
  • Migrational Patterns of Human throughout history
  • DNA Banks for Endangered Species
  • Poached Animals

9
Materials Function
  • Strawberry large genome due to the fact that it
is an octoploid (8 times the amount of genetic
    info.)
  • Soap dissolve the phospholipid bilayers of the
    membrane and organelles (plant cell)
  • Salt break up the protein chains that bind the
    nucleic acids
  • Ethanol is kept cold on ice because the DNA is
insoluble making it easy to separate from the
    beaker.

10
conclusion
  • Online is posted the conclusion worksheet.
Answer all questions on your own sheet of paper.
Attach your answers to the rest of your lab
    report.
  • Lab report due Wednesday.
