  • A. 200BC. Indo Europeans settled in Greece.
    They laid down the foundation of western
    civilization.
  • B. The Greeks believed in many gods, these gods
    were written about in the famous epic poems the
    Iliad Odyssey. They also held Olympics in
    honor of their gods.
  • C. The Greeks formed city states the most
    famous of these were Athens Sparta
  • D. The Greeks are also famous for inventing
    democracy

  • II Hellenistic Age
  • A. During the Hellenistic Age the Greeks
    fought many wars
  • B. 400s BC. The Persians invaded Greece.
    Athens Sparta combined to defeat them.
  • C. Later in the 400s BC Athens Sparta
    fought the Peloponnesian War. (Sparta won)
  • D. Despite all of this fighting Greek culture
    reached new heights.

  • A. Greeks are famous for their architecture
    (Parthenon), sculptures (The Discus

    thinkers/philosophers (explain the natural world)

    Oath)
  • 3. Socrates? learning through questioning

    reasoning

  • A. Alexanders father unified the Greek city
    states.
  • B. Alexander a great military leader
    conquered the Middle East,
    Mesopotamia, and all the way to India
  • C. Alexander died at 32, but he spread
    Greek culture around the known civilized
    world.
  • D. After his death his generals killed his
    family divided his empire for themselves.

  • A. Greek culture greatly influenced the Romans
  • B. The Romans had a form of government called
    a Republic
  • C. The Republic later became an empire.
  • D. Julius Caesar became dictator for life.

    Octavian fought a civil war. (east
    vs. west)
  • F. Octavian won and became Augustus.
  • G. Pox Ramona- time period when Rome was at
    its height and at peace (200 years)
  • H. Rome also had welfare program,
    entertainment (Gladiators), extensive roads
    aqueducts program.

  • B. Jesus founded Christianity
  • C. The Romans put Jesus to death because
    they saw him as a threat to their power.
  • D. Within 400 years Christianity had spread
    throughout all of The Roman Empire and
    became the official religion.
