What is Cyberbullying???
  • Using e-mail, instant messaging, chat rooms, or
    other forms of information technology to
    deliberately harass, threaten, or intimidate
    someone
  • By using a computer, a bully is able to hide
    behind an electronic veil, disguising his or her
    true identity

How often does cyberbullying happen?
  • Nearly 20 of teens had a cyberbully pretend to
    be someone else in order to trick them online,
    getting them to reveal personal information
  • 17 of teens were victimized
  • by someone lying about them online

How often does cyberbullying happen ??
  • 13 of teens learned that a cyberbully was
    pretending to be them while communicating with
    someone else
  • 10 of teens were victimized because someone
    posted unflattering pictures of them online,
    without permission
  • 81 of teens said that others cyberbully because
    they think its funny

  • Megan- Jen, send Sarah an instant message and
    be really mean.
  • Jen- Ok, that sounds like fun!
  • On the computer Jen- Hi, Sarah.
  • Sarah- Hi, Jen! Whats up?
  • Jen- Youre ugly and dumb! NO one wants to be
    friends with you anymore. You look like a big,
    fat, clown!
  • Sarah- I thought you were my friend! What did I
    do?!
  • Jen- Oh I was J/K! Cant you take a joke?
  • IF YOU WONT SAY IT IN PERSON, DONT SAY IT
    ONLINE!

Impact of Cyberbullying
  • Students may
  • Be angry
  • Be depressed
  • Be embarrassed
  • Be scared for their safety/ scared for their life
  • Seek revenge on the bully
  • Start avoiding others, including friends, family,
    school and other activites
  • Become bullies themselves in order to feel more
    powerful and less hurt

What to do if you receive nasty emails
  • NEVER reply to unpleasant or unwanted emails
    because a response is what the sender is looking
    for
  • Keep the email as evidence and tell someone you
    trust (parents, teachers, principals, guidance
    counselor, siblings, etc.) what is going on

What to do if you get hassled in a chat room or
instant messaging
  • DO NOT give out any personal information online
  • DO NOT accept emails or open files from someone
    you do not know
  • Remember that people in chat rooms may not be who
    they say they are
  • If someone in the chat room is making you feel
    uncomfortable, leave the chat room and tell an
    adult

What to do if you receive a creepy phone call or
text message
  • Always tell an adult each time this happens
  • DO NOT give out personal information to just
    anyone
  • If you do not recognize the number calling
  • you, let the person leave a message
