What is an Adjective?
  • An adjective is a word that modifies, or
    describes, a noun or a pronoun.
  • Ex A heavy rainstorm soaked the campsite.
  • Ex The thirty students piled into the crowded
    room.
  • What are the adjectives?

  • What Kind?
  • Which one?
  • How many?

What kind? Green backpack spicy stew
Which one or ones? Last hamburger Third hike

Predicate Adjectives
  • A predicate adjective is an adjective that
    follows a linking verb and describes the verbs
    subject. The linking verb connects the predicate
    adjective with the subject.
  • Ex A volcanic eruption is violent.
  • Ex The lava looks very thick.

Proper Adjectives
  • A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun.
    Proper adjectives are always capitalized.

Demonstrative Adjectives
  • The demonstrative adjectives this, that, these,
    and those, are the same as demonstrative pronouns
    but they are used to modify or describe a noun or
    pronoun.
  • Ex This apartment needs furniture.
  • Ex Can you pick up those shoes.
  • Demonstrative adjective or pronoun?
  • Those are my shoes on the table.
  • Ask yourself is it modifying or describing a
    noun?

Comparison of Adjectives
  • The original form of the word is the positive
    form.
  • An adjective that compares one noun to another
    uses the comparative form.
  • An adjective that compares three or more nouns to
    another uses the superlative form.
  • Ex Sean is tall. (Positive)
  • Ex Sean is taller than Crystal.(Comparative)
  • Ex Sean is the tallest in the class.
    (Superlative)
