WASTE WATER PROBLEM IN VOJVODINA AND PRIORITY FOR
WASTE WATER TREATMENT IN SOME MUNICIPALITIES
Ivana Loncarevic, Biljana Pajin, Zita Šereš
3
Population in Vojvodina and quantities of waste
water
Registration of 2012 Republic of
Serbia population of 7 565 761 people
Vojvodina - 1 995 679 (26.38) Based to the
study of Sustainable Development of Water Power

WHICH QUANTITIES OF WASTE WATER IS IT ABOUT?
  • Erdevik settlement with population of 3 350
    people
  • Accumulations on 2 brooks Moharac and Bruje
  • Lake Bruje is 990 m long with max width of 175 m
and average depth of 3-5 m.

European norm of waste water plant capacity - 150
l/habitant/day volume of lake quantity of
waste water of one settlement with population of
6 200 habitants/year (5 500 - 6 800 - Titel,
Rumenka, Kovilj, Kisac, Bac, Kljajicevo,
Omoljica, Dolovo, Jabuka, Kovacica, Padina,
Bavaniste, Banatski Karlovac, Horgos, Mol,
Melenci, Novo Milosevo, itc).

Problem with waste water in settlements without
sewer system
  • Water supply system v
  • Sewer system /
  • Septic tanks v
  • In every of previous mentioned settlements every
year one of such lakes goes underground!!!
  • Septic tanks are almost out of function in some
    period of the year.
  • Waste water mixes with underground water and it
    remains in the subsurface.
  • Underground layer in settlements cannot receive
and purify all produced waste water - very often
    it comes to the surface.

7
Settlements are contaminated by their own waste
water
8
You can never know where it comes from!
9
  • How people are supposed to solve the problem???
dig new septic tanks, use old wells as septic
    tanks
  • In some settlements - number of septic tanks
    number of habitants.
  • Septic tanks are emptied by cisterns around
    settlements into lagoons.

irrigation canal
lagoon
  • Emptying septic tanks with cisterns is not
    efficient either.
  • Waste water mixed with underground water slowly
flows towards ground depression into irrigation
    canals nearby.
  • It stinks and becomes a source of disease.

Situation with waste water in Novi Sad
  • Novi Sad has a population of 350 000 habitants
    with surrounding settlements.
  • Waste water on 5 points into the Danube.
  • 3 drainages on the left riverbank and 2 on the
    right.
  • 70 000 m3 waste water per day volume of Bruja
    lake in 5 days.
  • 1 m3/s of waste water - 86 400 m3 per day.
  • The low water flow of Danube 1 300 m3/s - 0.77
    of waste water.
  • Minimal water flows are in January and February
(780 m3/s) - 1.28 of waste water for that flow.

12
  • All the above data refers to the used water.
  • Since Novi Sad has a general sewer system, waste
water mixes with precipitation water and lets out
    into the Danube.
  • Around 38 000 000 m3 of used water and about 9
time less amount of precipitation water (4 4
500 000 m3) is released by the sewer system into
    the Danube per year.
  • According to the study of Sustainable Water Power
Engineering of the Republic of Serbia

per year
30
13
Waste water is released into the Danube without
any previous water treatment.
14
  • Total situation regarding waste water treatment
in Vojvodina is very bad and needs to be
    improved!
  • Less than 20 waste water treatment plants are in
    function.

!
  • PRIORITY
  • Social community should help those habitants that
don't have sewer system, but have a big problem
    with waste water.
  • Waste water treatment plants should be provided
for cities that don't have problems with waste
water, but let out unpurified into the rivers and
    canals.
