Title: Deuteronomy

1
Deuteronomy
  • A Womans Place is in the.?

2
  • In this book are the words that Moses spoke to
the people of Israel when they were in the
wilderness east of the Jordan River.
    (Deuteronomy 11 GN)

3
  • I just want to do what the Bible says.
  • The Bible says it, I believe it, and that
    settles it.
  • Dont spend a lot of time with fancy
explanations and theories. Just obey the word of
    God.

4
  • Every year be sure to save a tenth of the crops
harvested from whatever you plant in your
    fields.
  • But suppose you cant carry that ten percent of
your harvest to the place where the LORD chooses
to be worshiped. If you live too far away, or if
the LORD gives you a big harvest, then sell this
part and take the money there instead. When you
and your family arrive, spend the money on food
for a big celebration. Buy cattle, sheep, goats,
wine, beer, and if there are any other kinds of
food that you want, buy those too. (Deuteronomy
    1424-26 CEV)

5
  • wine, or other alcoholic drink (NLT)
  • wine, or beer--anything that looks good to you
    (The Message)
  • wine, liquor-whatever you choose (GODS Word)

6
Cities of refuge
  • When the LORD your God destroys the nations
whose land He is giving you, you will take over
their land and settle in their towns and homes.
Then you must set apart three cities of refuge in
the land the LORD your God is giving you. Survey
the territory, and divide the land the LORD your
God is giving you into three districts, with one
of these cities in each districtIf someone kills
    another person unintentionally, without previous
hostility, the slayer may flee to any of these
cities to live in safety. (Deuteronomy 191-4
    NLT)

7
  • For example, suppose someone goes into the
forest with a neighbor to cut wood. And suppose
one of them swings an ax to chop down a tree, and
the ax head flies off the handle, killing the
other person. In such cases, the slayer may flee
to one of the cities of refuge to live in safety.
If the distance to the nearest city of refuge is
too far, an enraged avenger might be able to
chase down and kill the person who caused the
death. Then the slayer would die unfairly, since
he had never shown hostility toward the person
who died. That is why I am commanding you to set
aside three cities of refuge. (Deuteronomy
    195-7 NLT)

8
  • I forbid the practice of private vengeance. If a
man accidently kills another man while chopping
wood, his blood may not be avenged by his
    family.

9
Slavery
  • Slavery was established by decree of Almighty
God...it is sanctioned in the Bible, in both
Testaments, from Genesis to Revelation...it has
existed in all ages, has been found among the
people of the highest civilization, and in
    nations of the highest proficiency
    in the arts.
  • Jefferson Davis

10
  • "If you buy a Hebrew slave, he may serve for no
more than six years. Set him free in the seventh
year, and he will owe you nothing for his
    freedom. (Exodus 212 NLT)
  • When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she
will not be freed at the end of six years as the
    men are. (Exodus 217 NLT)

11
  • Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and
trembling and do it with a sincere heart, as
though you were serving Christ. (Ephesians 65
    GNB)

12
  • Masters, be fair and just in the way you treat
your slaves. Remember that you too have a Master
    in heaven. (Colossians 41 GNB)
  • There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no
longer slave or free, there is no longer male and
female for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.
    (Galatians 328)

13
  • It was not the apostles work to overturn
arbitrarily or suddenly the established order of
society. To attempt this would be to prevent the
success of the gospel. But he taught principles
which struck at the very foundation of slavery
and which, if carried into effect, would surely
undermine the whole system. (AA pg. 459)

14
Polygamy
  • Before we begin, it is necessary to examine all
assumptions in the polygamy issue as it relates
to the Bible Do you accept the Bible as Gods
Wordfrom cover to cover? If your answer is "no",
then there is no point in your continuing with
this essay because we will be working on
    different assumptionsThe reason I would
categorize you as "secular" is because the
arguments advanced by secularists are practically
the same as those advanced by those who do not
wholly accept the Bible's teachings. Somewhere
along the line Yahweh's infallible Word is judged
by those "Christians" who find it difficult to
accept what Yahweh says in the same way as
secularists do. Those who only accept the Bible
in part only accept Yahweh in part.

15
  • In my experience, though, the vast majority of
Christians who say they accept God's Word from
cover to cover rarely do. When Gods Word
contradicts what they believe, instead of
confessing their error and readjusting their
lives accordinglythey wriggle and squirm and try
to twist Scripture to conform to them.

16
  • If a man takes a second wife, he must continue
to give his first wife the same amount of food
and clothing and the same rights that she had
    before. (Exodus 2110 GNB)

17
War
  • God is pro war

  • Suppose a man marries a young woman and later he
decides he doesn't want her. So he makes up false
charges against her, accusing her of not being a
virgin when they got married. If this happens,
the young woman's parents are to take the
blood-stained wedding sheet that proves she was a
virgin, and they are to show it in court to the
town leaders. Her father will say to them, I
gave my daughter to this man in marriage, and now
he doesnt want her. He has made false charges
against her, saying that she was not a virgin
when he married her. But here is the proof that
my daughter was a virgin look at the bloodstains
on the wedding sheet! (Deuteronomy 2213-17
    GNB)

20
  • Then the town leaders are to take the husband
and beat him. They are also to fine him a hundred
pieces of silver and give the money to the young
woman's father, because the man has brought
disgrace on an Israelite woman. Moreover, she
will continue to be his wife, and he can never
divorce her as long as he lives. But if the
charge is true and there is no proof that she was
a virgin, then they are to take her out to the
entrance of her father's house, where the men of
her city are to stone her to death. She has done
a shameful thing among our people by having
intercourse before she was married, while she was
still living in her father's house. In this way
you will get rid of this evil. (Deuteronomy
    2218-21 GNB)

21
  • If two men are having a fight and the wife of
one tries to help her husband by grabbing hold of
the other mans genitals, show her no mercy cut
off her hand. (Deuteronomy 2511-12 GNB)
  • ? Shave her groin

22
  • When the LORD your God gives you victory in
battle and you take prisoners, you may see among
them a beautiful woman that you like and want to
marry. Take her to your home, where she will
shave her head, cut her fingernails, and change
her clothes. She is to stay in your home and
mourn for her parents for a month after that,
you may marry her. Later, if you no longer want
her, you are to let her go free. Since you forced
her to have intercourse with you, you cannot
treat her as a slave and sell her. (Deuteronomy
    2110-14 GNB)

23
  • Suppose a man is caught raping a young woman who
is not engaged. He is to pay her father the bride
price of fifty pieces of silver, and she is to
become his wife, because he forced her to have
intercourse with him. He can never divorce her as
long as he lives. No man is to disgrace his
father by having intercourse with any of his
    father's wives. (Deuteronomy 2228-30 GNB)

24
Divorce
  • It was also said, Anyone who divorces his wife
must give her a written notice of divorce. But
now I tell you if a man divorces his wife for
any cause other than her unfaithfulness, then he
    is guilty... (Matthew 531-32)

25
  • Some Pharisees came and tried to trap Him with
this question Should a man be allowed to
divorce his wife for just any reason? Havent
you read the Scriptures? Jesus replied. They
record that from the beginning 'God made them
male and female.' And He said, 'This explains why
a man leaves his father and mother and is joined
to his wife, and the two are united into one.'
Since they are no longer two but one, let no one
split apart what God has joined together. Then
why did Moses say in the law that a man could
give his wife a written notice of divorce and
    send her away? they asked.

26
  • Moses permitted divorce only as a concession to
your hard hearts, but it was not what God had
    originally intended. (Matthew 193-8 NLT)

27
  • Those who come to the conclusion that there is
not a distinction made in the Bible all the way
from Adam to Revelation in the roles of men and
women in the church have to go through the most
phenomenal mind bending gymnastic to escape the
plain truth, that its incomprehensible to me.

28
  • Women submit yourselves to your own husbands
    (Ephesians 522)
  • Some will say, well he (Paul) was off his
medication those days. Or that this just
doesnt really matter. Paul was being influenced
by the traditions of the culture? So were not
supposed to take these verses seriously. Whats
gonna happen to your Bible? How are you gonna
chop up your scriptures if you start picking and
choosing what passages and commands you think the
writers were under some imbalanced influence of
the cultures of the day? - Batchelor

29
  • The ultimate authority biblically, for Gods
people, from Adam to the present day, has been
that men are to be the priest leaders in the
family and in the church. They are to be
ordained. What that means is, God has designed in
his order of things, doesnt matter how popular
it is, or what the world says, its what the word
says that men should have the authority to be
the spiritual guides, the leaders in familySo
when God says things in his word should be a
certain way, are we going to tell him hes wrong?
We may not understand it, but the first thing
before we understand is to submit to what he
    says. - Batchelor

  • The head of woman is man (1 Corinthians 113)
  • A woman dishonors her head if she prays or
prophesies without a covering on her head, for
this is the same as shaving her head. Yes, if she
refuses to wear a head covering, she should cut
off all her haira woman should wear a covering
on her head to show she is under authority. (1
    Corinthians 115,6,10).

32
  • But if anyone wants to argue about this, I
simply say that we have no other custom than
this, and neither to Gods other churches. (1
    Corinthians 1116)

33
  • The women should keep quiet in the meetings.
They are not allowed to speak as the Jewish Law
says, they must not be in charge. If they want to
find out something, they should ask their
husbands at home. It is a disgraceful thing for a
woman to speak in a church meeting. (1
    Corinthians 1433-35)

34
  • Oracle of Delphi was a priestess
  • in that context, Paul is saying, tell them the
