  • Conjunctions also pave the way for a smooth
    transition of ideas.
  • E.g. Miles also tried to teach Chantek more
virtuous habits such as saving and sharing.
  • The conjunction also connects this paragraph
with the previous one. Such as introduces a new
example to be mentioned in the sentences to
    follow.

47
Summary writing
  • The author of this article has been working
for many years on the (1. animal intelligence
(????) . She realized that if animals can think,
    2. they will probably do their best thinking when
it serves their own purposes, not when scientists
    ask them to (?????????????,????????????????????).
In the example of Lets Make a Deal, Jendrys
and Miless experiments with Colo and Chantek
revealed the evidence that 3. animals have the
skills in trading one thing for another
(??????????). In another story of Tale of a
Whale, Laule found that animals want to
cooperate with human beings when they

48
  • learn 4. it is in their interest to cooperate
(???????). Moreover, they can assess a situation,
    5. and then do something based on the judgments
    they made (?????????????). 6. Sometimes
evidence of intelligence can be seen in attempts
to deceive (?????????????????????). A case in
point is Melati and Towan. Animals horizons are
more limited than ours, but it is still
comforting to realize that 7. animals can stand
back and assess the world around them )
    (????????????
  • ???????).

Writing practice
  • Write an essay entitled Animal Intelligence as I
See It in about 150 words. Your paper should
    cover the following points.
  • 1.Your opinion on animal intelligence
  • 2. Give one or two examples as evidence.

54
A sample
  • Are animals intelligent? It is a difficult
    question to decide.
  • Take the case of my dog, Sam. Whenever he does
something wrong, eats the chocolates we left on
the table, for example, Sam will hide. He clearly
knows he has done wrong and is likely to get
shouted at for it. Usually we find him hiding
under one of the beds. Unfortunately, being a
rather large dog, he can never fit all of him
under, and so you can see the back half of him
sticking out. Now, is he stupid enough to think
I cant see you, so you cant see me? Or is he
smart enough to be thinking, I know you know I
know you can see me. Isnt that funny?
  • That his tail is always wagging at such
moments leads me to suspect the latter
    explanation is nearer the truth.
