information that you can get via SIO)

Reading the Green Page
  • IC/CSW Course
  • All students must register for both these courses
    (no conflicts with IC!)
  • There is only one IC there are many 1st semester
    CSWs to choose from
  • Programming Course
  • Most students will take one programming course,
    either 15-100, 15-200, 15-113, or 15-211 see me
if you disagree with the recommendation.
  • Discrete Math Course 21-127
  • All students not placing out must register for
    section G,H,I, or J (lecture 3)
  • If you place out, you may register for it (if you
want to take DM at CMU)
  • Math Course
  • I have indicated the course that you can (and
    should) register for.
  • Science/Engineering and Humanities Courses
  • I have indicated the course you wanted to
    register for (with a comment).
  • Total Units based on my recommendation/your
    schedule
  • Final Comments

7
Registration Advice
  • Unit Total must be between 36 and 57 (inclusive)
  • Ensure that you can drop one course and still be
    above 36
  • So, 45 units is a reasonable minimum, because a
    typical course is 9 units
  • SCS receives about 75 slots for 76-101 each
    semester
  • Most students want to take this course, so if you
are in the second half of the queue numbers, plan
on taking some other humanities course in the
    fall
  • For all courses, avoid Section W (building MSB).
    It is in Qatar!
  • You may take a course, even if you have AP/other
    credit for it.
  • A Typical Schedule Includes
  • 2 seminars IC/CSW (15-128/99-101)
  • 5 academic programming, discrete/another math,
    science, humanities
  • If you play a varsity sport, I suggest you
    register for only 4 academics
  • You may change your registration after today
  • But, non-reserved slots will disappear fast, as
HSS students register and upperclass students
return and begin tinkering with their schedules
  • Avoid classes with (long) wait lists. If you are
waitlisted, attend class the first day. Talk to
the teacher before/after class be polite,
    sincere, etc.

8
Building a Schedule
  • Poll How many of you have used the Pulse
    Scheduler already?
  • OC Demos
  • Building a schedule using Pulse Scheduler/Tartan
    ScheduleMan (Jim Puls)
  • Registering using OLR (Josh Hailpern)
  • Demos will include use of waitlists,
    mistakes/corrections, etc.
  • Watch closely
  • I, and many of the OCs, will be in the room to
    help when you register
  • Levels of Accomplishment for Today
  • Minimal Register for the IC, a programming
    course, 21-127
  • SCS guarantees you a slot in each of these
    courses
  • Basic Minimal a CSW
  • Most Basic a math and science
    course (in a typical schedule)
  • All Most plus a humanities
    course and anything special
  • Im available on Friday from 1pm-4pm, for final
    registration help

9
The Process Groups and Stations

10
Academic Integrity Registration
  • I will discuss Academic Integrity in more detail
    in the afternoon
  • For registration, note that I will consider it an
academic violation if you register (typically on
a portable but any other machine as well) before
the time indicated by your queue number
  • I have set all SCS students to be able to
    register as of about 10am
  • But dont do so until your appointed time
  • There are all sorts of electronic time-stamps
placed on things you do with computers, so we can
    discover when you registered
  • If we discover that you registered before the
time indicated by your queue number
  • It will be reported to the Dean of Student
    Affairs
  • I personally will deregister you from all your
    courses
  • Youll have to register again, from scratch,
    after everyone else finishes
  • If you have already registered, and you tell me
immediately, we can work something out (but tell
    me immediately).
  • This will ensure fairness. Have a nice day ?

11
OCs Recommendations Q/A
  • All the adults will leave the room
  • The OCs will supply recommendations about the
scheduling process, and about individual courses,
    instructors, etc.
  • At the end, they will have a question and answer
    period
  • Arrive at your designated Group activity by 1115
