transliterated as Hangchow, is the capital and
largest city of Zhejiang Province in Eastern
China. It is governed as a sub-provincial city.
As of 2010, the entire administrative division
("shì", ???) or prefecture had a registered
population of 8.7 million people.2 The built up
area of the Hangzhou municipality had a resident
population of 4.227 million in 2003 (urban and
suburban districts), of which 1.91 million lived
in the six urban core districts.

A core city of the Yangtze River Delta, Hangzhou
has a position on the Hangzhou Bay 180 kilometres
(110 mi) southwest of Shanghai that gives it
economic power. It has been one of the most
renowned and prosperous cities of China for much
of the last 1,000 years, due in part to its
beautiful natural scenery. The city's West Lake
is its best-known attraction.

West Lake or Xi Hú (Chinese ?? literally "West
Lake") is a famous fresh water lake located in
the historic area of Hangzhou, the capital of
Zhejiang province in eastern China. The lake is
divided by the causeways of Su Di (?? / ??), Bái
Di (??), and Yánggong Di (??? / ???). There are
numerous temples, pagodas, gardens, and
artificial islands within the lake.

West Lake has influenced poets and painters
throughout the ages for its natural beauty and
historical relics, and it has been among the most
important sources of inspiration for Chinese
garden designers, as evidenced by the impact it
had on various Chinese classical gardens.1 It
was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011,
and was described as having "influenced garden
design in the rest of China as well as Japan and
Korea over the centuries"2 and as reflecting
"an idealized fusion between humans and
nature."2

of Tongxiang, located in northern Zhejiang
Province, People's Republic of China. It lies
