Title: Out with the Old and in with the New

1
Out with the Oldand in with the New
  • The Cry of the New Hermeneutic

2
Old vs. New
  • Many want to tell or hear some new thing (Acts
    1721)
  • New is not always wrong (Rom. 64 2
    Cor. 517 Heb. 88 Rev. 211-2)
  • However, in relation to truth, new is wrong
    (Gal. 16-9)
  • We must be content to walk in the old
paths of Gods truth (Jer. 616)

3
Background
  • Certain institutional brethren in the 1980s
began calling for a new hermeneutic
  • These brethren were members of a scholarship
    movement
  • The main assumption they made related to the date
of our hermeneutic. They claimed the hermeneutic
we use today began to be first used in the 1800s.

4
Hermeneutics Defined
  • Hermeneutics is the practice of reading, studying
    and interpreting the Bible
  • Hermeneutics is derived from the Greek Hermes,
messenger of the gods and interpreter of Jupiter
    (Acts 1412 Rom. 1614)
  • Some form of word hermeneutics (Gr.
hermeneuo) is found throughout the NT (Mt. 123
    Mk. 541 1522,34 Jn. 138,41-42 97 Lk.
    2427 Acts 436 936 138 1 Cor. 1210,20
    145,13,26-28 Heb. 511 72)

5
What is the Issue?
  • The issues is not Do we need a hermeneutic? The
scriptures must be interpreted (Neh. 88 Lk.
    2427)
  • The issue is Which hermeneutic will we use? The
one set for in the NT, or the many proposed by
    liberal Christians today

6
Six Practices Abandoned by theNew Hermeneutic
  • 1. Using the NT as a pattern or
    blueprint (Rom. 617 2 Tim. 113)
  • 2. Establishing Bible authority by
  • Direct statement (Jn. 1415)
  • Approved example (Phil. 49)
  • Necessary inference (Lk. 425-30)

7
Six Practices Abandoned by theNew Hermeneutic
  • 3. Making the silence of God prohibitive
    (Acts 1524 Heb. 15,13 711-14)
  • 4. Using the NT as a book of law (Jas. 125)
  • 5. Using deductive reasoning and logic when
learning Gods will (Acts 172,17 2625)
  • 6. Claiming to know the truth (Jn. 832 1717)

8
Evaluation of the New Hermeneutic
  • They do not practice what they preach they are
guilty of what they condemn (Rom. 217)
  • They have a hidden agenda (Gal. 24-5)
  • They offer a destructive liberty (2 Pet. 219)

Pluralism Subjectivism Agnosticism Relativism
Ecumenism Antinomianism Humanism
Utilitarianism Estheticism
9
Bible Interpretation Today
  • We do not need a new hermeneutic (which in
reality is old disbelief - Gen. 34 Lev. 101)
  • We do not need a Restoration Movement
    hermeneutic
  • We need the hermeneutic of Jesus, the apostles
    and the NT church
  • Let us not abandon what is clearly set forth in
    Gods word (Jude 3)
