1 En aquel tiempo, cuando Jesús vio a la
muchedumbre, subió al monte y se sentó.
Entonces se le acercaron sus discípulos.
2 Enseguida comenzó a enseñarles y les dijo
3 Dichosos los pobres de espíritu, porque de
ellos es el Reino de los cielos.

4 Dichosos los que lloran, porque serán
consolados.
5 Dichosos los sufridos, porque heredaran la
tierra.
6 Dichosos los que tienen hambre y sed de
justicia, porque serán saciados.
7 Dichosos los misericordiosos, porque
obtendrán misericordia.
8 Dichosos los limpios de corazón, porque verán
a Dios.

9 Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz, porque
se les llamará hijos de Dios.
10 Dichosos los perseguidos por causa de la
justicia, porque de ellos es el Reino de los
cielos.
11 Dichosos serán ustedes, cuando los injurien,
los persigan y digan cosas falsas de ustedes
por causa mía.
12 Alégrense y salten de contento, porque su
premio será grande en los cielos.

1 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the
mountain, and after he had sat down, his
disciples came to him.
2 He began to teach them, saying
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.
7
4 Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be
comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit
the land.
6 Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they will be satisfied.
7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be
shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will
see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
called children of God.
10 Blessed are they who are persecuted for the
sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom
of heaven.
11 Blessed are you when they insult you and
persecute you and utter every kind of evil
against you falsely because of me.
12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will
be great in heaven.

The Gospel today is the beginning of the Sermon
on the Mount. It is important because it sets
the stage for the teachings of Jesus. It is
like the Inaugural Address for his new Way of
Life.

El Evangelio de hoy es el comienzo del Sermón del
Monte. Es muy importante porque construye el
escenario de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo. Es
como Discurso de Inauguración para su nuevo Modo
de Vida.

When Jesus said Blessed are the poor in
spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven,
he is referring to those who have given up all
their possessions for the sake of the Kingdom of
God. This does not mean they are destitute.
Rather, they are working people who have nothing
superfluous but meet their own needs working
with their hands. The ideal is Jesus himself,
who was a carpenter. He was self-sufficient.

Cuando Jesús dice Bienaventurados los pobres
de espíritu, porque de ellos es el Reino de los
cielos, se refiere a alguien que ha dejado
todas sus posesiones por razón del Reino de Dios.
Es una persona que trabaja pero no tiene nada
sobrante. Tiene lo necesario porque trabaja con
sus manos. Hay que recordar que Jesús trabajo
como carpintero. Él es el ideal.

The second Beatitude is Blessed are they who
mourn, for they shall be comforted. The idea
is that Jesus in the teachings of his way of life
will show us how to find happiness. There will
be a comfort. One of the signs of the presence
of the God of Jesus Christ is joy. Someone said
that a saint that is sad is a sad saint. In
Luke 418 Jesus said he has come to set the
oppressed free. In addition, in Luke 621 he
says Blessed are those who weep, for they shall
laugh.

La segunda Bienaventuranza dice Bienaventurados
los que lloran porque ellos recibirán
consolación. La idea es que Jesús en sus
enseñanzas de su Camino de vida nos muestra la
manera de encontrar la felicidad. Allí se
encontrara el consuelo. Una de las señas de la
presencia del Dios de Jesucristo es el gozo.
Alguien dijo que un santo que esta triste es un
triste santo. En Lucas 418 Jesús dice que el ha
venido a liberar a los oprimidos. Y en Lucas
621 dice Bienaventurados los que lloran,
porque reirán.

St. Ignatius Loyola gives us another angle. He
says the evil one harasses with anxiety and
sadness. In this way, he raised obstacles to
our progress in the spiritual life. The Spirit
of God, on the other hand, gives courage and
strength, consolations, tears, inspirations
and peace. He makes all things easy, removing
all obstacles so that the soul goes forward in
doing good (Spiritual Exercises 315).

San Ignacio de Loyola nos presenta otra
interpretación. Él dice que el maligno nos
aflige con ansiedad y tristeza. Levanta
obstáculos para nuestro progreso en la vida
espiritual. El Espíritu de Dios, al contrario,
da animo y fortaleza, consolación, lagrimas,
inspiraciones y paz. Lo hace todo fácil,
removiendo todo obstáculo para que el alma avance
en hacer el bien (Ejercicios Espirituales 315).

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the
land. A person that is meek is one who has his
power under control. Moses comes to mind. He
was a powerful man, but most of the time kept it
under control. He really got angry when he
found the people worshiping the golden calf. He
threw the stones of the Ten Commandments at them
and broke them.

Bienaventurados los mansos, porque ellos
recibirán la tierra por heredad. La persona es
mansa que tiene dominio de sí mismo. Moisés se
me viene a la mente. Él era un hombre poderoso
sin embargo, guardaba su poder bajo control la
mayoría del tiempo. Pero sabemos que en verdad
se enojo cuando encontró a la gente dándole culto
a la baquita de oro. Les aventó las piedras
donde estaban escritas los Diez Mandamientos y
las quebró.

Jesus is meek and humble of heart (Matthew
1129). His power was kept under control. One
day he raged in anger when he cast out the
moneylenders from the Temple. He was moved by
the zeal for his Fathers house. It was supposed
to be a house of prayer, and not a den of
thieves.

Jesús es manso y humilde de corazón (Mateo
1129). Aunque poderoso, tenia su poder bajo
control. Pero sabemos que una vez se enojo y
lanzo a los prestamistas del Templo. Fue
conmovido apasionadamente por el celo por la Casa
de su Padre. Debía ser una casa de oración, y
no un nido de ladrones.

In Galatians, 522 St. Paul mentions the gifts
of the Holy Spirit. One of them is the gift of
self-control. This is not to be confused with
doing nothing in the face of evil. It occurs to
me that we need leaders with passion to energize
and promote social justice and so many other
good things.

En Galatos 522 San Pablo menciona a los dones
del Espíritu Santo. Uno de ellos es el don de
dominio de sí mismo. Ser manso, no quiere decir
que no hace uno nada en la presencia de la
maldad. Se me ocurre que necesitamos a personas
como Moisés y Jesús, que son lideres
apasionados que enérgicamente promueven el
bienestar y la justicia social y muchas otras
cosas.

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
This speaks of a hunger and thirst for God and
holiness. Truth and justice are part of it.
Ultimately, God alone can satisfy us. His
word is the guide. His love is everlasting!

Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de
justicia, porque ellos serán saciados. Esto
habla de hambre y sed por Dios y por la
santidad. La verdad y la justicia son parte de
ello. Ultimadamente, solo Dios puede saciarnos.
Solo Dios hace al hombre feliz. Su palabra es
nuestro guía. Su amor es eterno! Gloria a
Dios!

Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be
shown mercy. Jesus told Peter to be ready to
forgive always, seventy times seven times. In
addition, the Our Father says, Forgive us our
offenses, as we forgive those who offend us.
That is the only condition to receive our own
pardon. Love forgives all things. In our
Church, the mercy of God comes immediately when
we repent, and it becomes official when we go
to confession, to get advice and counsel from
the priest.

Bienaventurados los misericordiosos, porque
ellos alcanzaran misericordia. Jesús le dijo a
Pedro que tenia que estar listo para perdonar
siempre, setenta veces siete veces. Y en El
Padre Nuestro dice Perdónanos así como
perdamos a los que nos ofenden. Esa es la
única condición para recibir nuestro propio
perdón. El amor perdona todo. En nuestra
Iglesia la misericordia de Dios viene
inmediatamente cuando nos arrepentimos, y se
hace oficial cuando vamos a confesarnos, para
así recibir algún consejo del sacerdote.

Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will
see God. Without holiness, we cannot see
God. Purity is a gift of God. A healthy
spirituality teaches us how to be pleasing to the
Lord in all things. Good spiritual reading is a
great help. The word of God is laden with good
teachings. In addition, the lives of the
Saints are very interesting and helpful in a
concrete way.

Bienaventurados los limpios de corazón, porque
ellos verán a Dios. Sin la santidad, no
podemos ver a Dios. La pureza es un don de
Dios. Una espiritualidad sana enseña como
complacer a Dios en todas las cosas. La lectura
espiritual es muy buena ayuda. La palabra de
Dios esta llena de buenas enseñanzas. Y las
vidas de los Santos son muy interesantes y
ayudan de una manera muy concreta.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be
called children of God. Jesus was a man of
peace. He is called the Prince of Peace.
Peace is the tranquility of order (with Justice,
Equality and Opportunity for All). With all
the wars going on, our world needs peacemakers.
It all begins in the hearts, in our homes, in
our communities, in our Cities, in our States,
and in our Nation, thereafter in the whole
World. We cannot give what we do not have, and
that is why we need to practice our Peace (with
Justice, Equality and Opportunity for All).

Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque ellos
serán llamados hijos de Dios. Jesús era un
hombre de paz. Se llama Príncipe de Paz. Paz
es la tranquilidad de orden (con Justicia,
Igualdad, y Oportunidades para todos). Con tanta
guerra hoy en día, nuestro mundo necesita
pacificadores. Todo comienza en los corazones,
en nuestros hogares, en nuestras comunidades, en
nuestras Cuidades, nuestros Estados y en
nuestra Nación, luego la podemos llevar a todo
el Mundo. No podemos dar lo que no tenemos y
por eso necesitamos practicar la Paz (con
Justicia, Igualdad, y Oportunidades para todos).

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake
of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of
heaven. Jesus said we should be ready to
suffer insults, and rejection, and
humiliation, because of him. Anybody who has
worked in the pro-life movement knows what this
line means in very real circumstances.

Bienaventurados los que padecen persecución por
causa de la justicia, porque de ellos es el reino
de los cielos. Jesús dijo que hay que estar
listos para sufrir insultos, y rechazos, y
humillaciones, por razón de Él. Cualquiera que
ha trabajado en el movimiento Pro Vida sabe lo
que quiere decir esta línea en circunstancias muy
concretas.

Thats it in a nutshell. Each one of the
Beatitudes can be expounded into rather long
talks. I have tried to keep it short. Let us
pray for the experience of Jesus that comes from
living the beatitudes. He is the Way, and
the Truth, and the Life!

Hay esta en pocas palabras. Cada una de las
Bienaventuranzas se pueden desarrollar en largas
platicas. He tratado de hacer esto corto.
Oremos por la experiencia de vivir las
bienaventuranzas con Jesús. Él es el Camino,
La Verdad, y la Vida!
