The Learning Healthcare System (LHS) Electronic
Infrastructure

• A series of 3 workshops hosted by the IOM,
  sponsored by ONC
• Looked at what health and healthcare will look
  like in 2020 healthcare as a complex system
• What the electronic infrastructure (an ultra
  large scale system ULSS) will have to do to
  support the LHS of 2020
• Parts of the electronic infrastructure are
  already being implemented today
• Changes the way we look at things
• Public health can play a major role in shaping
  the LHS of 2020

PHDSC Business Case Public Health in HIT
Standardization

• National HIT standardization process requires
  collective input from public health on what
  public health issues need to be addressed in
  national interoperable HIT standards.
• This input needs to be collaboratively
  developed, put through the national HIT
  standardization process and uniformly
  implemented.
• Public Healths Organized Voice on HIT
  Standards will have to take on a character
  reflective of this reality.

  Standards as an open, transparent, participatory
  process of harmonizing program-specific and
  jurisdictional needs with national HIT
  interoperability standards by working with HIT
