3Links to programmes
- The European GMES programme for Global
- Monitoring for Environment and Security
has - identified a need for a sub-sea component
of a - proposed surveillance system as a
complementary - instrument to land and space born systems.
- EMSO observatories will allow permanent
real-time - environmental monitoring under global
climate change. - Thus EMSO is expected to become one of the
key- - components of GMES and the GEOS
- 10-year implementation plan1.

5EMSO objectives
The European Multidisciplinary Seafloor
Observation (EMSO) infrastructure is based on a
European-scale network of seafloor observatories
and platforms with the basic scientific objective
of long-term monitoring mainly in real-time of
environmental processes related to the
interaction between the geosphere, biosphere, and
hydrosphere.

6Norwegian participation
Develop next generation of science and
technology towards a strategic observing,
monitoring and prediction system for a permanent
interactive presence in the ocean. Global
climate change will affect the physical,
biological and biogeochemical characteristics of
ocean environments along the Norwegian-Barents-Sva
lbard margin modifying their functions in an
unknown way.

8Type of EU funding
- Combination of collaborative project and
coordination and support action - Requested financial EU support 5.6 Mio Eur
- CoordinatorDr Paolo Favali Rome, Italy
- Norwegian partner UoT (on behalf of the
NNC) - UoT responsible WP4 (Consolidate funding as
well as industry commitments)

9Preparatory phase
- Diversity of regional sites in terms of available
legal frameworks - Harmonisation of funding (national, European,
- international, industrial) with respect to
scope, - objectives, and timing
- Logistic constraints regarding available
resources - Possible technical bottle neck solutions
- close cooperation with US colleagues and industry.

10Activities
- EMSO deep-sea observatories will be deployed on
specific sites around European waters, reaching
from the Arctic to the Mediterranean Sea. - EMSO will be integrated from several regional
infrastructures each based on sub-sea observatory
sites (RLEs-Regional Legal Entities) all having a
single coordination entity (CLE-Core Legal
Entity). - EMSO will take part in the international
endeavour in seafloor observatories.
