Two Good Things Under the Articles Government

• Land Ordinance (1785)

• System to settle Northwest Territory
• Each town has 36 sections (1 square mile per
  section)
• Each block was 640
• Bought sight unseen
• Gets people to move west

• Decided how territories become states
• Need 60,000 citizens to apply to be a state
• All new states equal to original 13
• Outlaws slavery in Northwest Territory
• Still in effect today

• Shays Rebellion (1786)

• A farmer, Daniel Shays, owed to banks
• Gets 2000 followers to help him burn banks to
  destroy records of loans
• No executive branch to stop him
• Lack of control is last straw for the Articles of
  Confederation govt.
