US Department of Labor Occupational Outlook
Handbookhttp//www.bls.gov/oco/ocos267.htm
  • Despite the recent downturn in information
    technology, employment of computer software
engineers is expected to increase much faster
than the average for all occupations, as
businesses and other organizations adopt and
integrate new technologies and seek to maximize
the efficiency of their computer systems.

6
US Dept of LaborBureau of Labor
Statistics(2002-2012 Projections)
  • 7 of the 10 fastest growing occupations are
    computer (information technology) related
    occupations.
  • Money Magazine (Nov. 14, 2004)
  • Ranks CS as 6th among the top 10 degrees in
    employment demand.

7
Money Magazine (Feb. 2004)
  • Computer Science ranks in the top 5 of highest
paid professionals just out of college.
  • The average offer for computer science majors
rose 8.9 percent to 48,656 and more than half
    the offers surveyed topped 50,000.

8
And yet
  • The number of freshman indicating they are
planning on majoring in computer science has
declined by over 60 between the Fall of 2000 and
    2004 (HERI/UCLA quoted in May 2005 Computing
    Research News)
  • Job growth smaller pool of CS grads
    Opportunity!

9
Some Computer Science related specialties
  • Programmers (writing the instructions to tell
    computers what to do)
  • Software Engineers (design, develop, test, and
    evaluate software systems)
  • Systems Analysts (harness technology to solve
    general computer problems)
  • Network Administrators (interoperability and
    security of computer components)
  • Database Administrators (organize, store and
    secure data)
  • Support Specialists (technical support and
    advice to computer users)
  • Computer Scientists (theoretical research
    concerning technological innovation)

10
Recent CS Graduates (BS Degree)Sample Jobs
  • Carnegie Mellon University Graduate study in
    security.
  • Accenture following a semester internship
  • Abbott Labs - Software engineering
  • Microsoft - Testing tools and recruiting
  • Expedia - Web site development for online travel
    resources
  • Argonne National Laboratory Integration of new
    technologies, setting up high-speed networks
  • Apple Technical writer
  • Microsoft - Software Design Engineer
  • Motorola Software Development and Testing
  • Note Many federal agencies are needing computer
experts to meet new demands related to homeland
    security, etc.
